As I mentioned late last month, this year I’m focusing on seasonal ingredients and picking an ingredient of the month to make recipes with so you can make the most of seasonal recipes and save some money on seasonal ingredients. I’ve already revealed that my ingredient of the month is going to be avocado, but let’s find out what else is in season to go with it.
What’s in Season in January?
A lot of the items listed below probably won’t be a huge surprise to many people. I think the vast majority of us in the west associate winter vegetables with things like starchy root vegetables such as parsnips and potatoes. But a lot of fruits that you may think of as summery are also in season now, such as many members of the citrus family. And many salad staples like spinach and kale are also in season at this time of year.
Fruits

- Apples
- Avocado
- Banana
- Grapefruit
- Kiwi
- Leeks
- Lemon
- Limes
- Mango
- Oranges
- Pears
- Pomegranate
Vegetables

- Broccoli
- Brussel Sprouts
- Cabbage
- Cauliflower
- Celery
- Kale
- Lettuce
- Mushrooms
- Parsnips
- Potato
- Onions
- Spinach
- Squash – Butternut, Acorn
- Sweet potato
- Turnip
Recipes to try this month
If a month full of avocado isn’t quite your thing, then hopefully you’ll be able to enjoy a few other ingredients in season this month. Below you’ll find a selection of recipes using seasonal ingredients, including a range of traditional winter dishes and a few lighter options too.

It’s really interesting particularly the kiwis being in season for January for you as it’s winter! I always associate them with summer and delicious pavlova, haha!
Hope that you are having a great weekend! 🙂
Thank you Sophie this is so useful! I’m trying to make a conscious effort to buy more season fruits and veggies as well as growing my own this year too!
