2018 Beauty Favourites | Yearly Favourites

Hi guys, I can’t believe it’s time for a yearly favourites? I’m not sure where this year went but you’ve already heard that a million times by now so let’s move swiftly on. I did one of these last year and I enjoyed it so I thought we’d do another similar one. Last year, I hadn’t really spoken about makeup much on my blog so I only did my top 5 new additions for skincare. This year, you’ve seen me review and haul several foundations, so I’m going to do a section on those too.

As with last year, this is strictly products that are new to me this year. Not necessarily new launches, some of these products are new this year and others have been around a long time. Last year I limited myself to five things so the post wasn’t 5000 words long, so I did the same this year.

Unless otherwise stated these products are in no particular order, number five could be better than number one.

Top Five Skincare Additions

1. Skyn Iceland Gels

I technically got these in 2017 but didn’t try them until earlier this year. These things are great for tired eyes, puffy eyes, irritated eyes. Basically, if you have eyes, these are great. I was so impressed by how cooling they are. They moisturise the under eye area and I really did feel more awake after using them. I’ll definitely be getting more when I’ve used mine up.

Probably shouldn’t have included that last sentence because this is a favourites and likely to be true for every single product.

2. Ren Ready Steady Glow AHA Skin Tonic*

If you read my initial review of this, you’ll know I was obsessed. Then I featured it in a ‘reviewed it, do I still use it’ and was still obsessed. Months later, still obsessed. When I was picking my products for this post, I thought about doing a top five but still choosing one as my absolute favourite. I couldn’t choose between this one and another, so I had to ditch that. But this product is definitely a holy grail, will purchase forever item.  I haven’t spoken about what it does here because I did a full review and my opinions haven’t changed since then.

3. Sarah Chapman Ultra Recovery Booster*

I still can’t believe I never reviewed this because I spoke about it a lot when I first got it. This purchase dates back to January so I almost forgot that it was new to me this year and didn’t initially pick it up for this post. I know, it would have been a tragedy.  This was the other product I mentioned above that was a contender for top product. It’s a rich serum with an almost milky texture that soothes and calms skin when it’s dry or irritated. I always use this if I’ve had a reaction to something or when my skin is at its most dry. It’s expensive, but worth it.

4. Clinique Anti Wrinkle Face Cream SPF30 *

This product wasn’t one that I thought I’d love as much as I do. Usually, I only wear SPF50, but this one is an exception. I’ve always had more dry touch formulas (my preferred finish) for summer when my skin isn’t as dry. And I’ve always had really heavy, almost greasy formulas for winter when my skin literally could not be any more dry. But I’ve always struggled to find that in the middle kind of formula. I got this one for that purpose back in February and loved it so much I used it all the way through to October when I switched to the greasier formula.

It contains hyaluronic acid which helps keep the skin feeling comfortable but it absorbs quickly so doesn’t have that greasy residue. Works like a dream under makeup too. I don’t know what else I could ask for. Other than the same formula with SPF 50.

5. Mudmasky  Sleep Repair Renewal Nourishing Mask

This is only a mini as I got this in my Pink Parcel but I fell in love with this one. It has such a nice hydrating texture and I really do see a difference overnight when I use this. It’s expensive for a mask and I’ve only been using my mini when I think my skin really needs it because I’m trying to prolong the inevitable purchase for as long as physically possible.

Nearly but not quite

I added this section last year and thought I’d give something else a mention this year too. Recently, I’ve been using and loving the REN Glow Daily Vitamin C Gel Cream.

vegan beauty brands

I’d love to include this in the list above, but I’ve only been using it for about a month and I’m not sure if that’s long enough to give it a slot. And it isn’t out until January. But I basically love the entire Ren Radiance Collection all year, every year.

Great, now for the foundations.

Top Five Foundation Additions

I’m going to keep this brief because I realised that most of these were in my Favourite Foundations for Dry Skin post and I don’t want to repeat myself. The products in this section are ranked from cheapest to most expensive, not by preference.

What a shock, not one of the following products actually matches my skin perfectly. 1 is too dark. 2 is a little dark and too pink. 3 is probably one of the best matches I have, good undertone but the tiniest bit too light. I don’t think I’ve ever said that before. 4 is too dark. 5 has the best undertone ever, but is also too dark.

I failed to pick a top skincare product of the year, BUT I think my favourite foundation of the year is number 5… And yes, I’m saying ‘I think’ so I can still change my mind.

1. Revolution  Pro Foundation Drops, £7

I reviewed this pretty soon after it first came out so I’m going to leave this one here and you can get more detail there. It’s very blendable, wears nicely, great on dry skin.

2. Rimmel Wake Me Up*, £8.99

Rimmel undoubtably has one of the worst shade ranges I’ve ever seen in my life, but I really like this formula so I put up with it. I know this one has been around forever now but I was always put off by the very visible shimmer in the bottle. The shimmer isn’t visible on the skin, at least not on mine and this one is great for dry skin on more natural makeup days.

3. Colourpop No Filter, $12

I know I promised you a review for this one in my haul and first impressions, it’s coming soon. Until then, spoiler, I really like this one. As I mentioned in my November Favourites, I’ve been loving the finsh I get when I mix this one with Wake Me Up. Together they make my perfect skin colour and have a beautiful natural skin/ satin finish. This one is matte so I haven’t had a chance to wear it much alone in the colder months, but I’ve already bought another bottle.

4. Too Faced Born This Way, £29

Another one that has been around forever but I only tried this year. Annoyingly, Too Faced have expanded their shade range on this product 3 or 4 times in the last few years. While it’s amazing that they are offering more shades, and the current one is very impressive, it’s still frustrating. When you’re like me and always at the very bottom of the shade spectrum, each shade expansion means my shade is the new shade. The shade I have is Swan, I think my actual new shade is their latest launch, Cloud.

 5. Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Foundation*, £35

I have such an affinity with Laura Mercier foundations. If I had to list my top 3 foundations ever, they’re all Laura Mercier. 2 of them have also been discontinued, which I’ll be bitter about until the day I die. This one claims to be matte but it’s so comfortable on dry skin I’m not sure how well it would perform on oily skin. I can’t wear this right now in the freezing temperatures. But I tried this in August and it served me well up until about two or three weeks ago.

There we have it, my favourite new additions to my collection for 2018. Did you see one of your favourites in this post? Let me know something new you fell in love with this year, I might be missing out!

Until next time,

Sophie

“Basically, if you have eyes, these are great,” that really made me laugh :’) those gels sounds soooo nice. I’m a bit bleary eyed and tired this morning, and I wish I could just lay here with those on. One of my goals for this coming year is to really start investing in anti-aging products, especially night creams & eye products! xx

Those eye gels sound amazing!! The line: “Basically, if you have eyes, these are great.” had me laughing. I need to get myself some of these, they sound so cooling and refreshing. I reeeeally need to get myself some new foundation soon! Rimmel sounds great, especially as it has added Vitamin C and SPF, I’ll have to check this out. Thanks for sharing your favourites Sophie! <3 xx

When I read this sentence: “Basically, if you have eyes, these are great.”, I couldn’t help but laugh. Brilliant! Great post, it’s really interesting to learn about someone’s favourites over the year. Although, it does makes me realise I’m not very adventurous with trying new products I feel like I should give the Revolution one a try, I recently tried their concealer out and loved it. I remember reading your review on it so maybe I will treat myself to it after Christmas 😀 also, it is pretty crazy how fast this year has gone?! Can’t believe it’s almost January!

Ooo I will have to try the eye gels…I have bought gold collagen ones before but these look like they would really help with puffy tired eyes!

I have to agree that the shading of the Rimmel is less than ideal, I don’t think I got through much of my bottle as I didn’t like the shade. I love Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation…it feels lovely on the skin and gives a radiant glow.

I love seeing other’s beauty products that they use!

I always use Clinique products but I haven’t yet tried their anti-wrinkle creams. As the lines have now started to appear, I’m going to try the cream you have recommended. Thank you for sharing xxx

Great post keep them coming! Need to try some of these …

Absolutely brilliant picks! I’m looking at treating myself and getting some bits that I can also review over the next couple of months. But am getting stuck on what to buy (I’m a nightmare) – I have seen so much hype around the too faced born this way foundation ..but I bought the Estee lauder double wear and I’ve only used it a few times. Disappointing to spend a lot of money on something and not like it. I also need to give colour pop a go – maybe I could opt for that instead and try a couple of things rather than just get one.
