I can’t believe that this series is already old enough for me to be writing the third one of these posts. Today, we’re talking about what’s in season in summer, and I’m quite excited about it. This wasn’t planned, but the way this series has panned out, my favourite two seasons for food are coming last. As I started Strictly Seasonal in winter, I’ll be ending it with autumn, which is my favourite food season. But summer comes in a very close second for one main reason – fruit. Summer, here in the UK, is all about berries. Huge trays of Scottish strawberries for £3? Yes please. Â
What’s In Season In Summer?Â
Strawberries Â
You’re about to have a lot of strawberry recipes coming your way. Strawberries are also in season in spring and some of you may remember me saying that I was holding off posting strawberry recipes to save them for summer. For Wimbledon fortnight this year, you’re getting six strawberries and cream inspired recipes – smoothies, pancakes, blondies…Â
RaspberriesÂ
I don’t really like raspberries. I know I’m not supposed to publicly admit that, but it’s true. It’s not that I dislike them, but I’d never choose them. You’re probably not going to see me using them. As for seasons, raspberry season is quite short, at their best in early summer – late June into July.Â
Blueberries Â
Fun fact: blueberries are my favourite fruit. They’re delicious, and so good for you too! I don’t think I have many blueberry recipes for some reason, so maybe that will change this summer. They’re at their best mid-late summer – July to September. Â
Berries in general…Â
Kiwi Â
I love kiwi but hardly ever eat them for some reason. They aren’t the easiest fruit to come up with recipes for, I typically end up using them as a smoothie topping. But, we’ll see. I really like them so it could be time to get creative. Kiwis are a true summer fruit, in peak season June to the end of August.Â
Courgettes Â
I mentioned in my recent courgetti recipe that courgettes were coming into season this month. Courgettes are in season June to October, at their best throughout the summer months. For me, they were definitely a food that my palette adapted to as I got older, I used to think they were like soggy cucumbers. Now, I think they’re a great summer vegetable for summer roasts or salad. Yes, they’re technically a fruit, but…Â
Several Varieties of Lettuce/ Salad BasesÂ
Rocket and watercress both come into season in summer. Lettuce thrives in cool but not too cool climates, British spring/ summertime produces lettuce, whereas warmer countries on the continent (and around the world) will see lettuce in the winter months.Â
What are you looking forward to eating this summer? Are there any recipes you’d like to see with these ingredients?Â
Until next time,Â
SophieÂ
I’m so looking forward to your summer recipes as I love all things fruits and salads so it’s the perfect month for it. Strawberries are my absolute favourite so I’m very excited to see what you do with those! X
I always try to avoid berries in autumn and winter but right now, as they are in season, I buy them all the time! Love kiwi too! i didn’t know courgette were more of a summer vegetable!
We adore raspberries and wild strawberries as we grow our own and pick them fresh 🙂 Kiwis we’re also growing this year and one thing I’ve heard about is sliced and frozen, as a sort of granita slice type thing? Sounds worth trying? Courgettes we hate but I gather you can use them in cakes, especially with limes – I’m sure you’d come up with something mouthwatering! Lisa x
This is such a handy post! I love Kiwi fruit, so I definitely need to get some whilst they’re in season again 🙂

Hey! Just found your blog, this was such an interesting post! I can’t wait to see your recipes with strawberries! I still have the same feeling about courgettes – wet, soggy cucumbers… maybe one day I will like them! x
Oh wow I had no idea kiwis were in season! I haven’t had one in ages but I love them. I can’t wait for all of your strawberry recipes- you can’t beat proper British strawberries! Soph x
Love it! However, I crave watermelon in the summer months! 🙂
I wait each year for Strawberry season! They just aren’t the same otherwise. You can’t beat a ruby red British strawberry!
I love strawberries!
I love berries, so I’m very glad they’re in season! We’ve to a bit strawberry mad in our house at the moment, my Dad’s constantly buying punnets of strawberries!
You’re so lucky! I love berries! Right now it’s mango season in the Caribbean 🙂 🙂
Oooh! I love how all of the berries and juicy fruits are in season right now. I am in the mood for strawberries, hehe. I am the same about kiwis… Maybe I am just super thrown off by the skin? Oooh, my mom grows a ton of courgettes. They’re so good for noodle alternatives! Thanks for sharing all of these in season grows!

I’m so happy berries are in season and I do love a good courgette.
I’ve actually never eaten many berries! I’ve had stuff with berries in it like jam or desserts but I’ve never really eaten them on their own. I can’t do strawberries because they just taste bitter. I do want to eat others with porridge but not sure which ones are best! xD

We eat so many mixed berries at this time of year x
I love blueberries, but only cooked so I’m looking forward to see your recipes!
