Welcome to spring! I’m in two minds right now. Part of me can’t believe that we’re so far into 2019 already that I’m writing the spring edition of Strictly Seasonal. The other part feels like I’ve been talking about winter vegetables forever and is very happy that we can move on. Today is my second seasonal installment of Strictly Seasonal, listing what’s in season in spring.
When I sat down and thought about this post, I realised spring is somewhat of a forgotten season. We all think of berries and fresh fruits for summer. Autumnal foods remind me of squash and hearty vegetables. And I’ve been doing the winter recipes of SS for too long to accurately describe the first thought when it comes to winter, but I’m sure I had one before this series started. When I think of spring, I don’t really think of anything. More fresh produce springs to mind than in winter, but I don’t have a strong image of what a spring plate looks like.
For the record, I’m classing my seasons from 21st onwards, so spring begins March 21st and June 21st is the first day of summer. And when I talk about things being in season, I mean here in the UK. Things may be different depending on your climate.
I’m very happy to report that researching this post was a lot more fun than winter, simply because spring has more variety. There are fruits and vegetables in season in spring, groundbreaking, I know. It was actually a struggle choosing which ones to include in this post but I tried to show as wide of a variety as I could. A lot of spring fruits are actually what I would consider to be summer fruits as they have a long season, so I’ve been more precise with the dates they’re in season than I was with my winter edition.
What’s in Season in Spring?
Asparagus – St Georges Day – 21st June (very specific, I know)
I’m warning you now, you’ll probably see a lot of this. I love asparagus, anyone else?
Strawberries – May 1st to end of September
The literal definition of summer to me. You probably won’t see much of these until summer as I already have a few strawberry based things planned for July.
Spinach – March to June
Spinach! I wasn’t sure when spinach was in season before researching this post, but I’m a huge fan. Expect to see this cropping up a lot.
Rhubarb – April to June
I hate rhubarb. I have no idea why, but I’ve hated it ever since I was a kid. I’ve tried to force myself to like it as an adult, it’s just not happening.
New potatoes – Late Spring
Everyone loves potatoes? If you disagree with that, feel free to click off now.
Apricots – British apricots, May – September
Again, I can take or leave apricots but can see something like an apricot muffin coming in the next couple of months.
That’s it for my picks of what’s in season in spring. Were you shocked to find out any of these things were coming into season? What’s your favourite thing on this list? Let me know if there’s one thing you’d love to see a recipe with soon!
Until next time,
Sophie

I think Spring might be my best season because I absolutely LOVE all of these things! I definitely need to eat more asparagus so can’t wait to see all your posts with it in <3

Yes to everything on your list except spinach, which I detest unless it’s raw. We grow our own rhubarb and strawberries and they make a lovely dessert when mixed. And on my list this year is to try and start growing an apricot tree as we have a sheltered sunny wall so fingers crossed. Looking forward to seeing some of your forthcoming recipes, Sophie!

Cannot wait for strawberries to not look dull!
Love these posts! Such good reminders for more sustainable recipes!
I love strawberries and spinach! Not together, but they really are my favourite things to get at the shops. They are both so healthy and yummy!
I love seasonal fruit and veg. Living in the countryside and going to the markets has always given me a love for these sorts of things! xx

Love this! I also love asparagus so I’m very excited to see what you come up with to do with it. I love it when the fruits etc start coming through and the fact that it isn’t too long until apricots now makes me very happy, aha. Great post!
Love this post!
Can’t wait for strawberry season x
AAAH STRAWBERRIES. Swear to god there are few things nicer than biting into a fresh, tasty and super juicy strawberry!! Love them with cream too and in fruit salads. I also adore spinach and have enjoyed asparagus the few times I’ve eaten it. I am completely in love with the scent of rhubarb but I’ve never actually eaten it… I think this post has just convinced me to try baking a pie with it in or something!

I love fruit so I get so excited for summer!
We grow our own rhubarb in my parents garden and my mum loves rhubarb and custard dishes. I enjoy spinach, especially a spinach cannelloni dish.
Great list, I love seasonal. There could be more on this list,
but still we have raspberries in freezing from last year!
Asparagus is such a good veggie, whenever I’m struggling to think of what to have with a meal, it’s my go to! It goes with anything ☺️ I can’t wait for strawberries and rhubarb (sorry) – rhubarb and apple crumble is my FAVOURITE dessert to make, and I love making my own jam. I’ve yet to make a strawberry jam, though

Oh wish I was back in Poland where I could taste fresh strawberries from field!
I love that new season means different fruits and veggies are now in full bloom. Ok, this is why I am starting to see more asparagus in my meals, hehe. OOooh I started incorporating spinach into my smoothies lately and LOVE IT!! Yesss, you can never go wrong with potatoes. Thanks for sharing this list! Gotta take advantage of them 🙂

I also feel the same when I try to think of Spring and what’s in season I struggle to think of something, it’s a lot easier for the other seasons! I love Strawberries though, I had natural yogurt with strawberries for breakfast today and it was very yummy! I love Rhubarb though, especially a rhubarb pie, it’s so sweet but so delicious!
