Strawberry cream puffs have to be one of the most typical/ traditionally British strawberry and cream recipes I could possibly think of, so I have no idea why it’s taken me so long to come up with my own version for strawberries and cream season.
This recipe is great for everyone, as you can make everything from scratch if you want to fully commit, or all of the ingredients for these strawberry cream puffs can be bought prepped and all you have to do is bake the pastry and assemble them when it’s time.
Ingredients and Substitutions
I’m not brave enough to make my own gluten free vegan puff pastry (major respect if you are) and feel no shame in using the Jus’ Rol option, but I’ve had a little look for gluten free pastry recipes that I’d be tempted to try, and this puff pastry recipe from Gluten Free on a Shoestring looks like the best bet to me (just sub the butter for a vegan butter, like Flora Plant).
I have a strawberry jam recipe if you wish to use homemade jam, and making a vegan buttercream or whipping cream is really simple too – but vegan whipped cream is easily purchased from a lot of major supermarkets now too.

Whipping Cream or Buttercream?
You can probably tell from the photos, but I opted to break with tradition and used buttercream rather than whipping cream for mine. I’ve made this recipe with both, but I opted to use some of my strawberry frosting to fill mine too and prefer the texture of the frosting with the buttercream rather than the whipping cream. However, I know a lot of people would rather opt for the traditional way, so I’ll include an option for both below.

Nutritional Information
Each serving of this recipe contains 333 calories, 2.5g of fibre and 1.5g of protein. Obviously, this dessert recipe isn’t the most plentiful when it comes to vitamins and minerals, but thanks to the fresh strawberries, you do get 10% of the RDA of vitamin C per serving.
The information above is based on using Elmlea Plant whipping cream rather than the buttercream option.

How to store and does it keep?
As they contain fresh ingredients, this recipe does need to be stored in the fridge. Keep in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 4-5 days after baking.
Vegan Strawberry Cream Puffs Recipe

Vegan Strawberry Cream Puffs Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 sheet GF Puff Pastry 280g
- Approx. 200g Strawberry Jam
- 5 medium Strawberries
- ½ cup Strawberry Frosting if using
- 180 ml vegan whipping cream
OR
- 200 g icing sugar
- 100 g vegan butter
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 180°C fan, and line 2 baking trays with greaseproof paper.
-
Unroll the sheet of puff pastry, slice into 6 even rectangles. Place onto a lined baking tray. Spread them out as the pastry will puff up.
-
Brush the pastries with dairy-free milk and sprinkle over some caster sugar. This is optional but I find the GF pastry struggles to brown and this step helps with that.
-
Place into the middle of the oven and bake for 10 minutes until golden in colour. Once ready, remove the tray from the oven. Allow the pastries to cool on the tray before transferring them onto a cooling track to cool fully before filling.
-
Place the whipping cream into a bowl and whip up until thick. It’s easier with a mixer, but you can use a hand whisk. Transfer the cream into a piping bag fitted with a star-tip nozzle.
-
Cut the strawberries into thin slices
-
Slice the pastries in half horizontally. Spread some strawberry jam over one half of the pastries.
-
Pipe stars of cream on-top of the jam, around the edges and pipe a star of strawberry frosting in the centre (if using) then lay on some strawberry slices.
-
Place the other half of the pastry rectangle on top.
-
Dust the pastries with a generous dusting of icing sugar (optional)
If using buttercream
-
Beat sifted icing sugar and vegan butter together and beat until smooth.
-
Prepare a piping bag and pipe the buttercream on each corner of the puffs.
-
Top your cream or buttercream with thinly sliced strawberries, then add the top of your cream puffs back on before serving.
Serve and enjoy!
Until next time,
Sophie
