I’m not too sure what this post is going to be called, it will probably end up being ‘vegan jam tarts recipe’ but this recipe is kind of a tart/pie hybrid. I asked on Twitter last week whether people preferred pies or tarts and the results came back almost 50/50, so I decided to make something that had elements of both. The crust is definitely more of a pie, but the filling is like a jam tart, and there’s no top crust/ lattice. So, a little bit of both? Whatever you decide this is, if you like almonds and summer berries, keep reading.
This recipe is my second to last in my summer recipes series and it’s officially wet, grey and cold. As a result, today’s recipe is definitely more of an autumnal bake, but using summer fruits.
Seasonal Ingredients
I used frozen berries for this recipe, but that consisted of a mixture of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. This recipe can be made with fresh versions of any/ all of these berries.
Strawberry season doesn’t end until the end of September, so they’re still in season. Blueberry season technically ended at the end of August. Raspberries are in season until the end of September as well, while blackberry season doesn’t end until October.
Nutritional Information
Obviously, this will vary slightly depending on the berries you choose, but they’re all a good source of vitamin C. Blackberries and blueberries are also a source of vitamin K, although the chia seeds in the jam provide more vitamin K than the berries.
The chia seeds also provide nearly 50% of the RDA of omega 3 per serving. This recipe also provides 40% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin E thanks to the almonds. There’s 5.2g of fibre per tart.
Refined Sugar Free Vegan Jam Tarts Recipe
I decided to make these tarts refined sugar free by avoiding added sugar in the jam, you could add some to taste and reduce the amount of chia seeds slightly if you wanted to make this recipe sweeter.

The crust for this recipe is actually one I’ve used several times before in a few recipes. It’s made from almonds and oats, so the almonds provide some natural sweetness, then there’s a tiny bit of added maple syrup. I tried making these in cases and directly in the tray, and I found them a lot easier to mold when shaping them directly in the tray. They don’t stick at all as long as they’re cool when they’re removed from the tray too, so there’s no need to grease it.
Suggested Recipe: Chocolate Almond Crumble Cookies
I was supposed to have 4, but I may or may not have eaten some of the crust while prepping them. So, I ended up with 3 and one fat oaty biscuit. Oops.
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, soy free and refined sugar free.

Vegan Jam Tarts Recipe
A vegan jam tart/ pie hybrid with a crunchy almond and oat crust and chia berry jam centre.
Ingredients
Crust
- 3/8 cup raw almonds
- ⅛ cup sunflower oil
- 1 ½ tbsp maple syrup
- ¼ cup oat flour
- ½ cup rolled oats
Jam
- ½ cup frozen or fresh berries
- ¾ cup water
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 180°c
-
Add the berries and water to a small saucepan on low heat and leave to simmer while you prep the crust, stirring occasionally.
-
Place almonds into food processor until it becomes a fine crumb.
-
Add all remaining ingredients other than the rolled oats and place on high until all ingredients are combined.
-
Now add the rolled oats and pulse until combined but mixture still has a bit of texture. It should be a little bit crumbly but be easily mouldable.
-
Divide the mixture into four equal servings then press the mixture into a muffin tray and mould into shape. You may find it easier to roll the mixture out, use a round cookie cutter to use as the base and use the remaining mixture for the edges.
-
Place in the centre of the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until fully cooked and golden.
-
Once the crust is in the oven, check the jam pan. The mixture should have reduced down significantly by now. Using a fork, lightly press the berries. If they mash easily, the jam is ready for the next step. If not, return to the heat for slightly longer. Remove from the heat. Continue to ‘mash’ your berries if you’d like a smooth texture. I opted to leave mine with some smaller fruit chunks. Stir in the chia seeds and set aside until cool.
-
When the crusts are cooked, remove from the oven and set aside until cool. Remove from the tray, then spoon the set jam into the crusts.
Serve and enjoy!
Do you prefer pies or tarts? What do you guys think of this hybrid recipe?
Until next time,
Sophie

The Quirky Queer
I love anything baked with berries. Yum, Yum! The vegan jam tarts look scrumptious. I also like almonds and chia seeds in my baking recipes too.
great recipe! i’ve never really had pie or tarts but i think it’s so cool how you’re able to combine elements from both to make something different. it shows how talented you are in the area of cooking/baking!

These look amazing! I love that they’re vegan and also healthier than anything you’d buy in a shop or café. I also love the fact that they’re a mix-up between a pie and a tart, so fun!
Is it bad I’ve just realized I’ve never personally made tarts before? Only pies! I actually just went to the supermarket for some blueberries, and was super surprised that everyone had the same thought- nearly couldn’t find blueberries! Strawberry season has passed by me (which I’m so sad about!) so I think I may make this with the blueberries I got! It looks so delicious, like a perfect mid-afternoon snack! It’s like a self pie haha! I’m going to try to make this this week!! I love trying your recipes out 🙂
OMG! These look so tasty, they would be awesome little treats for after supper in the evening. Gonna have to give these a go!

I’m not surprised it ended up 50/50! I can’t decided if I prefer pies or tarts – it depends on the topping/filling haha. They sound delicious 🙂 x

I LOVE that your poll came out split so you made a hybrid of the two… What commitment! These look really good and I also love that you didn’t include refined sugar, as I’m trying to cut more of that out at the moment!

Oh my goodness these sound so tasty! . I would have to have a cheat day to have these. I would love to maybe make these at Christmas! Such an autumnal snack! They looks so yummy! Thank you for sharing lovely xxxx
I think I prefer pies to tarts, but to be fair, I’ve not had tarts as frequently, and I did like them when I had them! I love that this has a bit of both, and mmmm sugar free anything is right up my alley, I love that I can just make this to have the natural sugars of the fruit. (Also, crunchy crust is definitely better than a softer one, change my mind :’) xx)
Oh my lord! These are what I need in my life right now with my healthy eating and cutting down on sugar. I can’t believe you mixed the two! Creating a hybrid. I would love to give these a go so thank you for sharing. Jam tarts are just…. sooooo yum!

These look amazing – I’m all for a hybrid recipe! I love jam tarts though x
I used to love jam tarts growing up – I need to try these x
OMG I am so here for this! I adore jam tarts and these are low enough in sugar that I can eat them!
Will it work if I’m lazy enough to sub in ground almonds cuz my blender isn’t strong enough 🙁 Last time I tried to do nut it kinda blew up XD
Yay! I’m glad you like the sound of them. I definitely think that could work, but I’d maybe do 3/4 of the amount ground + some chopped almonds to keep a little bit of texture in the crust! x
OMG that crust!
