It’s time for my favourite day of the year! Pancake Day is coming next week and of course, that means it’s time for another new pancake recipe. Those of you who have been following me for a while will probably know I have a lot of pancake recipes; I seem to do one for every event/ season. That being said, it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to share for pancake day this year. When I got the idea for this healthy chocolate pancakes recipe, I wasn’t convinced it was going to work. And I had to make a couple of recipe adjustments along the way to make it happen, but I was really happy with how they finally turned out.
I’ve shared a couple of healthy pancake recipes before, but they’ve always been banana based. And as I’ve said countless times before, I really can’t stand banana anything. One day I got this crazy idea that if I can sub frozen banana a frozen avocado in smoothie recipes (like my recent Nutella smoothie recipe), maybe just maybe I could make the same thing work for pancakes.
Like banana pancakes? Try these:
Ingredient Choices
Basic banana pancakes are simply banana, oats and a milk of your choice. Simply swapping the banana for avocado like this does not work. And this wasn’t a surprise. A big concern I had when I decided to try this was that avocadoes are obviously a source of fat, meaning they sit heavier and have a higher density than their carbohydrate counterparts (banana).
When I tried to make the simple version, it failed. They were flat, heavy and the wrong consistency. That’s when I added a vegan egg, the texture improved a lot, but they were still too heavy for my liking, so I added the baking powder and that’s when I was finally satisfied.
Basically, these are necessary ingredients so please don’t try to skip them if you’re making this for yourself. I used an egg replacer that comes as a powder that you mix with water, but I think a bicarbonate of soda and apple cider vinegar egg replacer would also work in this recipe if you don’t have the version I used to hand.

There’s an optional ingredient of added sugar. I didn’t use this in my own batch, but bananas obviously offer a sweetness that avocadoes don’t have and I find cocoa powder can be quite bitter sometimes. I found my chocolate milk to be enough of a sweetener, but you may want to add the sugar if you have a sweeter tooth.
Nutritional Information
Per half a recipe, this recipe contains 10g protein, 10g fibre and just under a third of your daily B2. There’s a healthy fat source from the avocado, and smaller amounts of vitamins B5 & B6. Other nutrients may be present if your non-dairy milk is supplemented. 335kcal per serving of 3 pancakes.
Healthy Chocolate Pancakes Recipe
An easy vegan healthy chocolate pancakes recipe. Perfect to treat yourself with this pancake day.
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, nut free and vegan. It does contain soy, although you can substitute your non-dairy milk.

Healthy Chocolate Pancakes Recipe
Ingredients
- ½ an avocado
- 1 cup chocolate soy milk
- 1 scant cup GF oats
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 vegan egg I used Free & Easy egg replacer
- 1 tbsp brown sugar optional - I didn’t use this
- Oil to fry in if necessary for your pan
Instructions
-
Add the oats to a blender and mix until a fine flour forms. Then add the cocoa, avocado and chocolate milk and blend until a thick, smooth batter forms. This mix will be thick (drop style pancakes), don’t worry if it isn’t runny.
-
Once blended, stir in the baking powder and egg replacer until smooth. Heat a non-stick frying pan on a low to medium heat. Once hot, drop about a sixth of the mixture in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, flip and cook for the same amount of time on the other side. Repeat until you’re out of mix.
-
Add toppings of your choice before serving.
Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
To top mine I simply added some frozen dark berries to a small saucepan and left to simmer while I prepped the pancakes to make a thick fruit sauce. Then drizzled with a small amount of maple syrup before serving.
Have you decided what kind of pancakes you’re having next week yet? What’s your favourite pancake topping?
Until next time,
Sophie

These pancakes look amazing! I’ve had banana pancakes before but these look fantastic and the fact that they’re so high in fibre and protein is even better. I’m having chocolate chip pancakes next week but I’m really tempted to try these as an alternative!

I didn’t know that it was almost pancake day! x
Hi Sophie, don’t you wish pancake day is every day? These look amazing. I’ve never tried mixing avocado in a pancake so this will be so much fun. Thank you so much for sharing! Does this work with other alternative milks such as oat or almond milk?
Hi! Yes, pancakes are the best! Absolutely, just about any non-dairy milk would work but I’d recommend using something sweetened rather than unsweetened just to help take the edge off the avocado. Regular almond or oat should work fine! I’m a big fan of hazelnut milk in chocolate breakfast recipes too, if that’s a milk that you find enjoyable. If you find they aren’t quite chocolatey enough without the chocolate milk try adding an extra tsp of cocoa and taking out a tbsp of the oat flour x
