XX Revolution Glow Foundation First Impressions | Dry Skin, New Lightest Shade 0.05

This post wasn’t on my schedule at all for this month, but I got this in the mail and I wanted to shout about it as soon as physically possible. You’ll have seen from in the title that it says XX Revolution Glow Foundation first impressions, not a review. I normally like to have something at least 3-4 weeks before I do a full review, and I’ve worn this twice so far. This is a true first impressions, I will do a follow up review in when I’ve had longer to test them out so look out for that next month if you’re interested in more detail. Today I’m testing the new XX Revolution Glow Skin Foundation and the Super Fixx Concealer. The reason I’m so excited about it? They have new paler shades! So, the new lightest shade that I’m testing is 0.05.  

I’ve done many Revolution posts before and I’ve experienced a few hit and misses. The last thing of theirs that I tried was the Conceal & Hydrate concealer, which I was very excited about. Then it turned out to be not that hydrating at all and a major disappointment. So when I saw that they’d launched their XX Revolution foundations in a glowy formula as well as a matte one, I was really excited, but I had my doubts.  

Product Overview 

Both the foundation and the concealer come in a very impressive 55 shades. The foundation is £15 for 27ml, so ever so slightly less product than a regular foundation and more expensive than a typical Revolution product. This brand moves more towards the midrange drugstore market, like L’Oreal, rather than true budget beauty.  

The concealer is £10 for 13.5ml, which is the same size as the supersized version of Conceal & Define.  

Both products are vegan friendly and the entire XX Revolution line is cruelty free.  

Packaging  

XX Revolution is a more premium addition to the Revolution family, and it shows in the packaging. The outer boxes are either glossy black or a frosted pink, both embossed with the XX logo. And the actual product packaging is a thick frosted glass that could easily be from a high end brand. 

Shades  

This is the really really really exciting part. It’s been a pet peeve of mine in the beauty industry for a long time that when new shades are added, they often get added in the middle of the shade range not at the lighter and deeper end. When Fenty went from 40 to 50 shades, the lightest shade remained the same, for example.  

Well, this new line has 55, and the lightest shade is now 0.05. I have the Revolution concealer in the previous lightest shade, 0.1 and complained a lot that although it was an okay match for my skin, I thought they could do better.  

This shade is described as being for ‘fairest skin – yellow undertone’, whereas the previous palest shade had a pink undertone. As someone who is very fair with more golden olive undertones, I really appreciate this as a lot of brands don’t do warmer shades at the fairest end of the spectrum.  

Shades Compared  

I swatched both the foundation and the concealer alongside the lightest foundations and concealers I own from Revolution, Fenty and Colourpop to see how they matched up. If you saw my recent Bali Body post you know what’s going on with my hands, please don’t be alarmed by how much deeper my skin is than the swatches. I promise my face is telling a different story.  

Other than the fact the undertones are ever so slightly different, the foundations swatched very similarly.  

When it comes to the concealer, the Colourpop one is still noticeably lighter than the other two, but that’s the only concealer I’ve ever found that’s slightly lighter than my skin other than pure whites so I’m not too mad at this one for being a tiny bit deeper than that.  

XX Revolution Glow Foundation First Impressions  

I’m going to save my run down on whether it lives up to the claims on the box for when I do my full review next month and I’ve had time to properly test it so the following first impressions are based on application and how it initially looked on my skin.  

Application  

I applied one side with a Beauty Blender and one side with an angled kabuki brush. Much to my surprise, I liked the Beauty Blender side a lot more. The formula is on the thicker side and it looked a little bit heavier when applied with a brush. Using the Beauty Blender made it look more natural on my skin and gave a slightly smoother blend. The difference was only slight, and the formula definitely does work with a brush, but I think I got better results on the BB side.  

Coverage wise, it’s on the fuller side, not the fullest coverage ever, but heavier than the average medium. It’s a heavier coverage than I typically wear, but it still looks fresh and skin-like, especially on the Beauty Blender side.  

Appearance 

I really like it. A lot. It’s nicely glowy without being greasy. I’m not seeing any texture being massively highlighted. I currently have a very much unwelcome guest on my cheek and it’s blended over that very nicely. So far, I’m extremely happy.  

And for the moment of truth, please take a moment to look at the next photo. I know this is an odd angle for a foundation review, but look how well this matches my skin! LOOK! I have been extremely negative about shade ranges more times than I can count when it comes to reviews, so can we please take a moment to look at what is possibly the best match ever. Testing XX Revolution Concealxx 

I’m going to keep this brief because this post is already getting long. The shade is equally as wonderful as the foundation. I normally have a hard time with concealers as I have very dry under eyes, it has to be dewy. But it also can’t be too heavy because my skin is too dry to set my under eye area.  

This needs a sponge. I always apply my concealer with a brush but I dabbed it once and it was already looking terrible, so I switched to my sponge and it looked a lot better. While it isn’t super dewy, it isn’t at all matte and the formula isn’t heavy. The coverage is pretty good too, especially considering it isn’t matte. I’d say it’s a similar coverage to the foundation in the sense that it’s fuller but not the fullest. But you could easily hide the average spot with it.  

Overall  

I don’t even know where to start. Right now, I couldn’t be much happier with these products. I’m praying to the skin gods that my opinions don’t change by the time I do my full review and that they both wear well when used with other products and I don’t experience any breakouts or irritation. But if they wear well, I think I have two new favourites.  

Of course, there is the fact that it’s only June, and my skin is dry now, but nowhere near as dry as it gets in the colder months. So, I’d have to wait until winter rolls around again to see if it makes true favourite status. But I’m optimistic about this one.
