AD | Dating may have been off the agenda for many people in 2020 for a few reasons. Not only do a lot of date settings centre around hospitality, whether that be a traditional dinner date, going for drinks, or even a coffee, but there’s also the risk element of being around someone new. With lockdowns prohibiting the number of places you can visit, and health concerns, planning a date hasn’t been straightforward. So why not try to recreate a traditional drinks/ dinner date for your at home dates?
Thankfully, it is 2020, and technology is incredible. Most people meet online these days anyway, and with things like Zoom and FaceTime available, you have way more options in terms of communication, and that gives you more options for virtual dates too.
At home dates are Safer
Sure, if you’re in England, you can still get a takeout coffee and go for a walk, and that might be nice. But it’s nearly winter, the weather might not be great. And there’s still the element of maybe not being so comfortable around a stranger at the moment.
Dating online may seem like a smarter idea in terms of health and safety. You can get to know someone a little over Zoom dates, reducing the stranger danger risk when you do meet face to face
The majority of people are looking to date someone fairly local, so if you’re searching the Yorkshire dating scene (insert wherever you live here), you might end up knowing the same places or liking some of the same restaurants/ bars.

Try An At Home Cooking Date
In a normal world, a decision would be made about where you should eat. And you can do the same thing at home. If you’re having a zoom date, plan your night as you would for a regular date. You can choose your restaurant and attempt to make your favourite dish from the menu at home and cook ‘together’ over Zoom. Or make the same recipe, compare to the pictures online and see who did it better. If your dish goes well, great. However, if it turns into a complete disaster, that could be an ice breaker and the foundation for a really funny story.
Not much of a cook? Buy a cocktail set (if you don’t have one already) and you can do the same thing with drinks.
It’s almost like going on an activity date with a cooking or cocktail making experience, only you’re in the comfort of your own home, you’re probably more relaxed and the whole situation might even end up feeling less awkward. Your guard doesn’t have to be up in the same way regarding safety concerns, and you’ll save money too!
If it all goes well, you’ve already set up the perfect arrangement for your first in person date too. Your attempt might not have been the restaurant standard you’re used to, so the first date could be the real life version of the virtual one you planned instead.
Single friends, have you been trying Zoom at home dates this year, or are you waiting until the world becomes a little more normal?
Until next time,
Sophie
