March is quite a tough month in terms of seasonal eating. The vast majority of the winter vegetables are no longer in season and most of the fun spring/ summer berries don’t come into season until May, leaving March looking a little bit empty. If you look back at my ‘What’s in Season?’ series at the end of the year, you’ll probably find the list for what’s in season in March is the smallest. But that did make it slightly easier to pick my ingredient of the month this month.
What’s in season in March?
Vegetables in Season in March
- Artichoke
- Beetroot
- Carrots
- Chicory
- Cucumber
- Leeks
- Parsnip
- Purple Sprouting Broccoli
- Radishes
- Sorrel
- Spring Greens
- Spring Onions
- Watercress
Fruits in Season in March
This won’t take long.
- Rhubarb
Yep, that’s it. Just the one.
Now, I’m not going to lie, I had to look this one up. Apparently, rhubarb is technically a vegetable but legally a fruit. And, yes, I once again had to look up what legally a fruit means. Google tells that’s something to do with how it’s sold and how we eat it. When you think of rhubarb, 99% of you will imagine some sort of crumble/ pie or another sweet dish before anything savoury comes to mind. Basically, classify it as either, but I didn’t want to leave the fruit section empty.
Ingredient of the Month
Carrots
I know what you’re thinking, carrots are quite boring. You can use them in almost anything, they’re a filler ingredient etc. But that’s why I’ve opted to use them. Yes, they’re in season right now, but they’re quite cheap all year compared to many other fresh vegetables. They’re nutritious, versatile and you can even make sweet treats with them too. Yes, I’m a carrot cake fan. Don’t hate me but there will be at least one sweet recipe with carrots this month. I apologise in advance.

…I said I’m a carrot cake fan.

How do you feel about carrot cake – a fan or sticking around for the savoury dishes only this month?
Until next time,
Sophie
I won’t lie – I’m obsessed with carrots. Great for dips, roast dinners and carrot cake. Can’t fault them! x

Legally a fruit? Well that’s a very serious term for a fruit isn’t it, haha. I actually love carrots, I don’t find them boring at all! Carrot cake is one of my faves and the spiced carrot soup sounds lovely!
Honestly, I was so shocked when I read that, I had to do another search to make sure that was actually a thing. But yeah, a vegetable, but ‘legally a fruit’. It sounds so ridiculous
I adore rhubarb and I was going to say it sits in both camps, like me it’s very indecisive as to what it wants lol
Loving this post! Thank you so much for sharing these amazing recipes with us, I’ll for sure be making some of them. I had no idea rhubarb came into season this month – that has me very excited. I’ve got lots of bakes I want to do with rhubarb! Great post Xo

Now the whole story about rhubarb has me in stitches, a veg that did not believe in itself enough! Or even the opposite, considering it’s legally a fruit. Some of my favourite veggies are in season this month and I cannot wait!
It’s mad that rhubarb is the only fruit in season in March! And it’s blown my mind that rhubarb is a fruit, I never realised that! x

We have a rhubarb festival at the end of February near to where I live as it’s part of the rhubarb triangle!
The carrot cake muffins look really good.
Thanks for these amazing recipes! The carrot cake cookies looks yum!

It’s been years since I’ve had carrot cake! We’ve got rhubarb in our garden right now that’s very nearly ready to be picked. x
I like carrots! They are great snacks with hummus. I also like them roasted with honey and thyme 🙂
I love carrot cake. I can’t believe rhubarb is the only in season fruit at the moment.
What a fun post to read! I love seasonal thoughts like the above, and I absolutely love carrots and parsnips. Wonderful roasted or in a casserole! Thank you for sharing this!
