What’s in season in February could be surprising to some people, although we’re still in winter and many of the traditional winter vegetables in season in January are still in season now, there are also a larger number of fruits we’d typically see as a summery option in season in February. This is great for those who don’t love root vegetables but want to add more fresh produce to their meals, or make healthier desserts.
It will come as no surprise that the vegetable list is longer at this time of year, with the vast majority of those traditional winter vegetables still being in season, but for my ingredient of the month I’ve tried to opt for something less traditionally associated with the winter months.

Recipes to Try This Month

This was one of my Christmas recipes last year but it’s still a firm favourite in my house, and that’s from someone who doesn’t typically love sprouts.

It’s a little early in the year for me to be getting excited about smoothie bowls, but if you don’t mind a colder breakfast and you’re still keeping up with your health goals, this is packed with micronutrients but the kiwi helps keep the sweetness.

And if you’re not ready for a smoothie for breakfast. This one could be for you. Seasonal oranges and made from a mix of ground nuts and oat flour for a healthier base ingredient and more balanced breakfast muffin.
Pomegranate & Passionfruit Salad

Warmer ingredients mixed in with a fresh base is my favourite way to construct a salad in a colder climate, and this winter salad is perfect for that.

A hearty winter warmer, this recipe contains purple sprouting broccoli and butternut squash, but you can switch them out for the same volume of any vegetables of your choice.
Ingredient of the Month
My ingredient of the month this month is going to be pineapple. Pineapple is quite the controversial ingredient because of the whole does this sweet fruit belong in savoury dishes argument. Honestly, I’d typically say no. But that’s partly why I chose it, this month I’m going to share a range of sweet and savoury dishes to try and broaden my own horizons and get the most out of what this ingredient has to offer.
Pineapples are also a great choice because on the whole, they’re quite large. Ultimately, that means you could create a few dishes with one fruit, and while they’re cheaper because they’re in season, that makes them a great economical choice if you’re trying to make your cash (and food) stretch a little further.
As I said, the sweet in the savoury isn’t typically my favourite thing, but I’m trying to push myself into trying something new, but my first pineapple recipe of the month is a breakfast dish. And passion fruits are also in season this month and pineapple and passion fruit is a great combination, so it would be rude not to. So, if pineapple in a savoury dish isn’t quite your thing either, there should still be a couple of recipes for you too.
What are your favourite ingredients this month? And are you shocked to see that any of these things are in season right now?
Until next time,
Sophie
