It was my birthday earlier this week! And it as my first one since discovering I’m gluten intolerant, and I was feeling all kinds of disappointment about that. Back when I just had a minor gluten sensitivity, birthdays would be the time to let go and be willing to suffer through a bit of bloating to enjoy all of the good food. This year? Not an option. The lead up to this what I ate today took me on a real journey from ‘let’s just eat the olive loaf and enjoy’ to rapidly realising a week’s worth of illness probably isn’t worth it to a more realistic ‘have one tiny treat but make the best of it approach’. So, here’s what I ate on my birthday as a gluten free vegan.
What I Ate on my birthday as a gluten free vegan
Breakfast
So, my animal friends kindly gifted me a bag of some of my favourite snacks. The first thing I ate was technically a pre-breakfast handful of smoked almonds. But breakfast itself was a serving og my peanut choc chip pancakes. This was where my little treat came in. I usually have this served with some Ben & Jerry’s non dairy peanut butter cookie ice cream. The cookies contain gluten. Seeing how I sacrificed my olive loaf dreams, I did have a little bit of my favourite ice cream. But I was cautious, tried to spoon out bits that were more PB than cookie and not make myself ill (this was successful).

Snacks
In my little bag of goodies, there were also FOUR bars of the strawberries & cream free from chocolate that I was talking about in my recent jam recipe post. So my first snack of the day was a couple of squares of that.

Lunch/ Afternoon Tea/ Dinner?
Obviously breakfast was pretty heavy so I didn’t eat again until later in the day. Due to the current situation, I’m still not up for eating out/ bars or anything along those lines really. Instead, we went for a drive and packed up a picnic for the afternoon. We had Hugo with us, so we were only adding little bits to our plates at a time so he wasn’t too tempted to help himself to a snack.
What was in the picnic?
- I made up some vegan GF sausage rolls with potato, finely chopped Gosh sausages, all in a herby tomato paste.
- Some GF focaccia with tapenade and olives
- A fruit pot
- General nibbles – crisps, crackers, the usual stuff…
- And, of course, a chew stick for his lordship.

Later
I was still quite full from breakfast at the point the picnic basket was being unpacked, so I was ready to explode later in the day. No more meals were consumed, but the leftovers from the picnic were left out for nibbling on.
And some more strawberries and cream chocolate.
Do any of you have birthdays soon? How are you planning on celebrating?
Until next time,
Sophie
Happy birthday! Sounds like a lovely day, and that vegan GF sausage roll sounds amazing! It was my birthday last week, I had a picnic on the beach with my family and then a chilled out day at home (with lots of snacking!)
All sounds delicious, especially those sausage rolls!
Also that is one cute dog
Happy Birthday lovely! Those pancakes those so tasty! I’m the same as you and not comfortable going out yet either, but your picnic looked so cute and fun! Hope you had a great birthday!
Happy belated birthday!! x
Aw I hope you had an amazing birthday! Those pancakes look delicious! I’m also vegan and try and eat less gluten due to crazy bloating when I eat it (which makes me unbelievae sad) so I will definitely have to try your pancake recipe!! I don’t have a birthday coming up but I am going to make my vegan choc chip cookies which my friend made as a giant version for my last birthday! x
This all looks so tasty!
Although I’m not a vegan or gluten free myself, I love the range of options that are available and do often choose vegan foods!
Thanks for sharing and I hope you had a lovely day! ☺️

Firstly i hope you had a great birthday! I wish I would have knew at the time:(. Almonds are like the only nut I like, so I deffo need to try them smoked, what else can you do with almonds? Currently waiting for my Mexican food to arrive but after looking at those pancakes I really fancy something sweet! Omg a birthday picnic with your dog, that sounds so amazing. Hugo is so cute too. I need to try that with Coda but she’s too restless she would never settle haha! I have never saw that chocolate from Morrisons before! Need to try it! x
I am not vegan but I have IBS so I try to follow the low fod-map diet. That makes it so hard to find anything to eat, so I love reading vegan food posts for ideas. Thank you so much for sharing! Happy Belated Birthday!
Happy belated birthday, Sophie! everything looked delicious and healthy, made me wish I had made pancakes for my birthday breakfast today.
A picnic sounds like the best way to celebrate your birthday. Glad you had a great day!

Happy belated birthday. I love the sound of the strawberry and cream chocolate.
Thanks for sharing this, my mother in law is Gluten free and I often struggle with what to make her when she comes round.
This post has shown me she can have most of the things we eat.
Happy belated birthday! The picnic sounds so fun!
Sounds like a lovely day, especially going for a picnic! Awh Hugo <3 Those pancakes look gorgeous as well!
Belated happy birthday to you! Looks like you had a fantastic feast! My eldest daughter is gluten free and tries to eat as vegan as possible, so I will send her the link to this post – she’s always on the lookout for food inspiration. And may all your birthday wishes come true!

Happy late birthday, Soph! I hope it was a good one, despite the circumstances <3 A birthday picnic sounds so DIVINE and sweet and summery; I love that! And Hugo is looking so cute here, aw xx
I think your breakfast was dessert all in itself! I love the idea of peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes with ice cream, and Ben and Jerry’s makes such good flavors. Going out on a picnic is such a refreshing idea.
My birthday is coming up in August so I have been giving plenty of thought to what I want. I think I am having a sponge cake jelly roll!
These all look so tasty! I love the look of those sausage rolls too, and the pancakes and everything, haha! You’re dog is super cute, also – love that he featured.
