I’ve only made vegan scones once before, and that was when I could still eat gluten. So, back in March when I was making an at home afternoon tea, it was my time to try and figure out a gluten free version. I opted for a classic glace cherry scone recipe, but you could switch them out for any dried fruit you wanted, or simply serve them plain.
When I first made these, I made them with an almond flour and GF flour and I wasn’t that keen on the texture with the almonds. However, everyone else I served them to really liked the almond flour. I’m not sure if I have defective taste buds and they were actually amazing, but I decided to make another version without the almonds too.
I did, however, love the photos I took of the almond batch before I made the other batch so I’m just going to insert a couple of those here. Can’t have them going to waste…

Anyway, after the almond batch, I made a vegan ‘all butter’ (Flora) scone using a blend of GF self raising and oat flour and they were so good! When I sent these ones over to my grandparents, they thought I’d made them a batch with ingredients I can’t eat because they tasted so much like the real thing.
Nutritional Information
Obviously, a scone isn’t the most nutrient dense food on earth and while the original almond batch was high in vitamin E, this one doesn’t really have a lot to shout about.
I used dairy alternatives that are fortified, so mine were a source of vitamin B2, D and calcium, but that will depend on your brand of milk.
My dairy free butter was also fortified to provide 100% of the RDA of omega 3, so it’s definitely worth checking your labels for things like that when choosing brands.
Gluten Free Vegan Cherry Scones Recipe

A gluten free and vegan alternative to an afternoon tea staple so no one has to miss out. An ‘all butter’ vegan cherry scone recipe that tastes so soft and buttery no one will know it’s free from.
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free and vegan. It can be nut or soy free depending on the version you opt for.

Gluten Free Vegan Cherry Scones Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup 120g Gluten Free Self Raising Flour
- ½ cup GF oat flour 50g
- ¼ tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- ¼ cup 55g Vegan Butter/Margarine
- 2 Tbsp Caster Sugar
- 3/8 cup 90ml vanilla soy milk
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 100 g glace cherries
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 220°C
-
Sift the flour into a mixing bowl and add salt and baking powder.
-
Add the vegan butter and rub in with your fingers until the mix is crumbly.
-
Add the caster sugar.
-
Then add the soy milk, vanilla extract and lemon juice and mix in with a spoon.
-
If the dough is too sticky at any point, add more flour. The perfect texture is a tiny bit sticky, so you get a little on your hands but still very easy to shape and be easy enough to move around on a clean surface.
-
Use your hands to shape the dough into little balls and then flatten the top and bottom – makes around 4 scones
-
Bake in the oven for around 20 minutes until browned and an inserted skewer comes out clean
-
Leave to cool slightly before slicing in half to eat
Serve and enjoy!

Have you guys ever made a gluten free scone before?
Until tomorrow,
Sophie
I love a scone so much and there’s not many ingredients needed to make these which is great! Can’t wait to try these.
This is making me miss afternoon tea dates with my bestie so so much! Will it work if I swapped out the cherries for blueberries?
Absolutely! You can put in any fruit of your choice and they’ll work as long as the recipe ratios are kept the same. I hope you enjoy if you decide to give them a go
Oh, this looks so good! You wouldn’t tell they were any different from ‘regular’ scones! I bet they taste divine. I haven’t had a go at making scones before, I don’t know why they always seem a bit daunting. Think I will have to give these a go though!

I’ve never tried a gluten free version before but these look and sound so delicious.
I loves scones, but cherry scones are definitely my favourite, these look amazing!
I actually can’t imagine the time and effort you must put into these recipes to get them perfect for your eating requirements, Sophie! These scones look and sound absolutely delicious and I’d much prefer having cherries in them than raisins/sultanas.

Thank you!! And you’ve just given me a post idea so thanks for that too . This one actually turned out to be easier to adapt than I was expecting, the gluten/ all butter thing had me nervous about trying this one x

Definitely forwarding this to my mother. She loves baking and always on the lookout for new recipes, specifically Gluten Free or Vegan lol. Plus I love scones, so hint hint haha.
I don’t think that I have ever had a scone before it looks in some pictures like a cookie but in others like a biscuit, I sound good like the cherries and sugar reminds me of cookies 🙂
This recipe reminds me of my favorite biscuit recipe; the biscuits peel in half so easily, but I love the idea of making this and plying it with cherry preserves. 🙂
Your scones look delicious! I love cherries, I might give this recipe a try!

Ahh I love finding gluten-free/vegan recipes! I actually don’t know if I’ve ever eaten a scone.. so all the more reasons to make these! They look delish.
These look great. I have never done any gluten-free baking, so this would be an interesting recipe to try. I will add this to my list of recipes to try. I absolutely love scones.
This looks like a delicious breakfast treat!
What brand of GF flour do you use? Gosh, I want to try every recipe you publish!
Thank you! I usually use either Sainsbury’s own brand free from flour or sometimes the Freee by Doves Farm, I think I used the Sainsbury’s one when I was making these though!
These look very delicious, I went for an afternoon tea back at the start of the year, but after reading this its made me want to make my own afternoon tea. I’ve never tried gf scones before, I’d probably like them just as much as gluten ones.

My husband is asking if we can add desiccated coconut to your recipe?
Hi, can I clarify whether you’re wanting to simply add it or use it in place of something please?
