I’m a huge fan of recipes that have a Christmas feel when it comes to flavours but don’t feel out of place to make the rest of the year either. And I think this vegan chocolate orange loaf recipe fits that description perfectly. The candied orange peel pieces and chocolate orange flavour makes it feel really Christmassy but would be an equally delicious snack in April.
You’ll see below that I’ve given a couple of different flour options for this recipe depending on whether you want more of a cake-like loaf or something with a slightly firmer slice depending on your preferences. I’ve made this recipe both ways, and each turned out wonderfully.

Nutritional Information
Each serving of this recipe contains 3g of protein, 2.5g of fibre and an eighth of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E, based on 8 slices per loaf. The loaf should serve 8-10 slices.

Ingredients Choices
As always, I’ve mixed some GF oat flour in with another flour for this recipe. The images shown use GF self raising flour, which gives this loaf a softer sponge texture. But I’ve also made this recipe with bread flour. The oat flour keeps the texture nice and fluffy, but the bread flour helps the loaf hold its structure a little better, and gives you a slightly firmer slice. Both of them work really well depending on the end texture you’re after.
The candied orange peel is a nice festive addition, but feel free to skip it if you’d rather just have a hint of orange flavour.
I’ve used soy milk in this recipe as it’s usually my first choice for bakes, but you can swap for any dairy alternatives of your choice if soy is an issue for you.
For the chocolate orange icing, I used the Moo Free Orange Caramel Crunch bar, which adds some delicious crunch to the recipe too. This is a vegan milk chocolate alternative, which I know might not be for everyone. But I’ve made this with dark orange chocolate too, which works just as well.

How to store and does it keep?
Store in an airtight container, ideally somewhere cool, out of direct sunlight and this recipe should last 4-5 days after baking.

GF Vegan Chocolate Orange Loaf Recipe
Ingredients
- ¾ cup GF oat flour
- ¼ cup GF bread flour or GF self raising flour
- ¼ cup cacao powder
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- ¼ TSP salt
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 2 tsps orange extract
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- ¾ cup soy milk
- ¼ cup sunflower oil
- 2 tbsp candied orange peel
- 3 tbsp dark chocolate chips
Icing
- 1 tbsp vegan butter
- 80 g vegan orange chocolate
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 180°F (350°C). Line a loaf tin with greaseproof paper.
-
Sift both flours and cocoa powder into a mixing bowl and add the sugar, baking soda and salt and mix in.
-
Add in the soy milk, oil, and vinegar until well combined and no large lumps remain (tiny lumps are okay). Stir in the candied orange peel and chocolate chips
-
Pour the batter in the lined loaf tin, place the tin in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
-
Let the loaf cool for a few minutes before removing from the tin and placing on a cooling rack to cool completely before frosting.
-
When the loaf has cooled frost the loaf.
Icing
-
Melt the vegan chocolate in a glass bowl over a pan of boiling water. When the chocolate is 80% melted, add the vegan butter, stir to combine and remove from the heat when both the chocolate and the vegan butter have melted.
-
Pour the mix over the loaf, using a spoon to spread it if necessary. Leave somewhere cool for the icing to set before serving.
Serve and enjoy!

Are you a chocolate orange fan or are you more of a mint person at Christmas?

Sophie
