I’m going to be very honest here, when I was creating my recipes for Vegmas this year, this is the one that filled me with the most joy. From the way it turned out, to the flavours working so well together – this is my favourite. And that award usually goes to savoury option, so this must be good. As I said, I wanted to make things this year that didn’t necessarily need eating that quickly, and this chocolate orange custard pie recipe will keep for about a week in the fridge, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy.
If you think you recognise the crust for this recipe, that’s probably because you do. I’ve used it a few times before in various dishes, but this is the first time I’ve used it for a custard pie, and it’s usually plain almond and oat rather than chocolatey. But I love the texture of this crust and thought it would be perfect for this recipe.
I’m seriously thinking about making this my Christmas dessert this year, it went down so well! I always get really excited about my Christmas desserts so it’s usually a big decision. And I have no idea why because everyone is always too stuffed by dessert to fully enjoy it anyway…
Nutritional Information
I know no one wants to think about the nutrition in their dessert recipes, but thanks to the almond crust there are actually a couple of healthy elements in here. Each slice contains 4g of fibre and 7g of protein, not a lot, but not bad for a dessert.
As I make my custard with soy milk, each serving contains 20% of your daily B2 and the fortified milk provides 15% of your daily calcium.
That healthy almond crust I was talking about provides just under 6mg of vitamin E, which equates to roughly 30% of the RDA.

Chocolate Orange Custard Pie Recipe
A sweet and crunchy chocolate almond & oat crust with a thick and creamy custard filling. This chocolate orange custard pie recipe is really simple to make and requires very little hands on prep time, making it a perfect choice for Christmas Day.
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free and vegan. It does contain nuts and soy.

Chocolate Orange Custard Pie Recipe
Ingredients
Crust
- ¾ cup almonds
- ½ cup oat flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- ⅓ cup maple syrup
- ¼ cup sunflower oil
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
Custard
- 2 cups chocolate soy milk
- 4 tbsp cornflour
- 40 g white caster sugar
- 1 ½ tsp orange extract
Decoration
- Candied orange pieces/ chocolate orange chunks optional
Instructions
Crust
-
Preheat oven to 180c
-
Place almonds into food processor until it becomes a fine crumb.
-
Add all remaining ingredients other than the rolled oats and place on high until all ingredients are combined.
-
Now add the rolled oats and pulse until combined but mixture still has a bit of texture. It should be a little bit crumbly but be easily mouldable.
-
Press mixture around the edge of a 9-inch dish. Place in oven for 10-12 minutes until the crust is firm and set.
-
Once cooked remove from the oven and allow to fully cool before preparing the custard.
Custard
-
Add the milk to a saucepan on low to medium heat and bring to a boil, stir in the orange extract.
-
Then add 40g of caster sugar and 4 tbsp of cornflour.
-
Transfer the mixture to a heat-resistant blender and blend until you get a nice smooth texture. Pour back into the pan, lower the heat and cook for another 10 minutes until it thickens. It may take less time, so watch closely.
-
When the crust has cooled and the custard has thickened, pour the custard over the top evenly. As the dish is cool, it will start to set quickly so try to pour evenly.
-
If you’re adding some of the decorations suggested, sprinkle those on immediately so they’re more likely to hold in place as the custard fully sets. Place dish in the fridge/ somewhere cool until the custard has fully set. Once set, it’s ready to be sliced and served.
Serve and enjoy!

This recipe is a strong contender for my Christmas Day dessert menu this year, could you see the people around your table enjoying this too?
Until next time,
Sophie
This looks like the most delicious thing!

Wow, this looks amazing.
It’s my last day of isolation today which means I can get back into trying different recipes! I started pinning my faves of yours, so excited to try! I will be adding this one too! I love that when I look at the ingredients I know that I have them or can get them, it really frustrates me when I find a recipe and I think hmm where am I going to find this
Hayley
This is exactly what I was looking for….Thank you for sharing this post 🙂
This recipe looks wonderful, never made anything like this before but this sounds like a healthier dessert. I need to make this.

The Curvaceous Vegan
For pudding on Christmas day we do usually go for something with little prep time as there’s so much cooking done on that day it’s nice to have a lot of time to just relax and do nothing too! This sounds like a good pudding to have though, it wouldn’t be something I would enjoy (just because of the orange) but the rest of my family would probably love it! xx
This sounds AMAZING. My family love chocolate orange combos, so I think this will be a strong contender for my own Christmas Day dessert too! The crust looks fantastic. I’ve got to say, I’ve not really tried many vegan desserts, but this one sounds unreal
