This recipe is like popcorn cauliflower meets barbecue cauliflower wings, and I’m offering two different versions. There are some cheesy fried cauliflower bites if you want to go all out, or a slightly healthier baked version that’s more aligned to a typical sticky cauliflower wings recipe.
The fried version involves adding baked barbecue cauliflower to some batter, breading, then frying. It takes more time and prep but makes a delicious dish. However, there is a healthier version on the menu too if fried food isn’t quite your thing. Serve as a main, side, or as a sharing dish.

Nutritional Information
This recipe serves two as a main or four as a side, the following information is based on two servings per recipe. Each serving contains 594 calories, 9g of protein and 9g of fibre. You’ll also get over 100% of your daily vitamin C, two thirds of your daily vitamin K and 40% of your daily B6 and folate.
Ingredient Choices and Substitutions
I used these crispy breadcrumbs, which are my favourites and don’t require any prep. If you’re opting for a paler/ non-crunchy breadcrumb, you may want to precook them for 10 minutes at 180c prior to following the instructions below.
If you don’t need this recipe to be gluten free, you may need more flour. Due to GF flour being naturally drier than regular plain flour, the batter is thicker with less, so you’ll need roughly 10% more to reach the same consistency.

How to store, keep and does it reheat?
Whichever way you opt to make these, they’re best eaten fresh, so try to cook what you think you’ll need. But if you do have leftovers, they can be reheated. If you opt for the fried version of this recipe, the easiest way to reheat them is to preheat the oven to 200c and cook them for 10-12 minutes to warm them back through.
For the baked version, you can store these Cauliflower Wings in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 4 days, and reheat them in an oven until warmed, which should take about 15 minutes.
Vegan BBQ Cauliflower Recipe
Crispy cheesy cauliflower bites or baked BBQ cauliflower wings.
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, soy free and vegan. It can be nut free depending on your choice of cheese alternative (if using).

Vegan BBQ Cauliflower Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 medium head cauliflower broken into florets
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 cup barbecue sauce
- 1 cup GF breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- Pinch of salt
- 30 g vegan cheese optional
- ½ cup gluten free flour
- ¾ cup non-dairy milk
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 190c. Spread cauliflower florets evenly across the baking tray. Drizzle with the olive oil and cook for 10 minutes.
-
Mix the flour and non-dairy milk in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. Add the gluten free breadcrumbs, paprika, cumin and salt in another small bowl and mix until evenly combined.
-
Remove the tray from the oven and coat the partially cooked cauliflower in the barbecue sauce. Spend some time making sure each piece is fully coated. Return the tray to the oven for a further 5 minutes. Remove the tray from the oven and sprinkle the grated cheese over the cooked barbecue cauliflower while it’s still warm.
Frying
-
If frying, leave the cauliflower for five minutes to cool slightly and give the cheese a couple of minutes to partially melt before you coat them.
-
While the cauliflower is cooling, add a pan of a neutral cooking oil to a medium heat to get it up to temperature, ready for frying.
-
Take each floret (or a couple of smaller ones if they’re able to stick together with the barbecue sauce) and dip into the batter, then the breading. Make sure it’s well coated, repeat the dipping process if necessary.
-
Add approximately 4 or 5 pieces to the pan of hot oil, be very careful as you’re placing them in the pan and cook for roughly 5 minutes until the batter/ breading is evenly cooked. Repeat until all of the florets are gone.
Baking
-
If baking, after adding the cheese to the cauliflower, pour over the breadcrumbs and stir to coat the barbecue pieces, then return the tray to the oven for a further 15-20 minutes.
Serve and enjoy!
Until next time,
Sophie
