Here me out, I know this sounds a little crazy and most of you are thinking, ‘I washed this morning’, like most other people. I guess what I’m really asking here is what do you consider washing to be? I know this is sounding more random, hang in there. There’s a point, I promise.
Wipes?
I recently bought some wipes for the first time in about five years. I’ve had them about a month and I’ve used a few to rub swatches off my hands and one to deal with a little eyeliner mishap but other than that I think I’ve used one to actually remove my makeup. As unhappy as I am that I actually used one to remove my makeup, I used it in the situation I foresaw when buying them in the first place.

I picked them up thinking I’ll use them once in a blue moon on a day I’m ill or exhausted, go to bed and forget I still have stuff on my face. They may come in handy to just have in is basically where I’m going with this. And one day a few weeks ago I was feeling ill and exhausted and used one for this very reason, it was better than falling asleep with my makeup on.
But this whole saga reminded me of my early teenage years, before I educated myself about what was good for my face, when I would use a wipe almost every day. It got me thinking, a lot of people still use them and with the wide range of ‘quick’ options out there now from wipes to micellar waters, how many people actually go days without washing their face.
Quick options?
To me washing your face means washing with water and a cleanser. Using this definition, I wash my face once a day, at night. The debate whether you should use a cleanser on a morning or not is as old as time but for me a morning cleanse irritates my sensitive skin. For some reason using a cleanser on a morning means everything I put on afterwards burns my face, even the products that cause no irritation after a PM cleanse. On a morning I simply use a splash of lukewarm water and gently pat dry. At night, my cleansing routine is like a military operation.
Some of you are probably thinking that’s wrong, and are very proud of your morning skincare routines. Likewise I’m sure some of you are thinking you’ve been relying on your wipes and waters a little too much lately.
Benefits of Cleansing:
While we all have those lazy days where we want it over and done with as quick as possible, it’s not good to use them too frequently.
Here’s why:
- Who actually wants to go to bed with the day’s grime on their face?
- If your skin still has traces of makeup or sunscreen on, you’ve basically wasted your money on whatever you put over it. Fancy serums and oils won’t work to the best of their ability if there’s something between them and your face.
- Reduces the risk of acne and helps control oil production.
- At 20 you may not think about this often but you’ll also age better, and it gets you in a good routine as you get older.

Whether you prefer a cream, gel, oil or balm cleanser, that’s totally up to you. As long as you’re using them. Don’t fall into the trap of seeing products in your bathroom and think you have a routine just because they’re there and you use them occasionally. Give your skin a treat and massage with an oil or balm every once in a while.
So back to the beginning, how often do you wash your face? And which are your favourite cleansers? I’d love some new recommendations!

I totally agree that you don’t need to go in with heavy cleansing in the morning. I just use my Micellar Water in the morning, and leave the heavy duty cleansing until the evening!
Having sensitive skin must suck – mines combination so I’m always doing my best to combat that! Great post 🙂
Hi, if I am in a rush or away fot the night I use Boots own wipes and they are great and a good price as well.
Ooo, what an interesting post. I only use make-up wipes now to really take off eyeliner/mascara as I find thats easier to do, and then have a certain cleanser and exfoliator.

This is really interesting I love how you have included all the benefits of cleansing. It’s a handy reminder as cleansing is easy to forget when you are busy. I’m currently using Simple micellar water and the night cream and it’s quite good ☺️. Thank you for sharing xx

I use Origins Checks and Balances face wash to take everything off at night and a Neutrogena face scrub in the morning. I have to use water otherwise I don’t feel clean! Thank you for sharing your tips, this was a really good read, x

I tend to give my face a a good clean with wipes in the evening and then put on my moisturiser and eye cream. In the morning I wash my face with Biore Bicarb and always use CT Miracle Cream as my make up base. A good skincare routine is so important. Great post
Great post! I use my Mary Kay regimen, which is my cleanser and moisturizer or night serum. Then I am also using three products to fight acne right now, my sulfer product, a face wash I’ve purchased at the dollar store that contains 2percent sacilic acid and then a oxy gel with benzol peroxide. I also use tea tree oil occasionally as well as my mk microdemabraison & pore minimizer. I try to drink water too. Usually I don’t use cheap dollar store products, but wanted a quick cheap fix to test how it would work. Later I’ll purchase new pricer products with similar ingredients since I’m loving the results. I’d like to start adding a retionol.
Thanks for your awesome post, it’s a really good reminder for me to stay on my regime.
I use a cleanser every night – either the Garnier Micellar Water for sensitive skin or their wipes when I travel.
I really need to start doing this more, thanks for the tips. I’m definitely going to check out these products!

What a great topic! I hate to keep cleansing wipes in my home because I just know I will start to become lazy, but my favourite ones are the Neutrogena wipes. I’m very diligent with my skincare routine both day and night and use several different products depending on how my skin is feeling that day (a bit excessive and though I’m still in my 20s I know my skin will thank me in several years). My all time favourite cleanser is the Aesop fab face cleanser, a bit pricey, but I do like to treat my skin once in awhile. For drugstore, it really depends but have been currently loving the Olay Daily Renewal Cleanser for these drier months
I shower and wash my hair daily, so wash my face when in the shower.
At night, I do a whole cleansing routine, cleansing oil, foam, cleansing pads.
I used to be super laaaaazy and just use a wet wipe.
Great post! I’m so lazy when it comes to cleansing my face >< I always aim to do it every other day but that never happens! Thanks for the tips 🙂 xxx

This was a really useful read. I’m guilty of just using a wipe on my face to remove my (minimal) makeup every night and hadn’t thought about how it’s probably not that great for my skin. I should probably be using a proper cleanser!
It can be an easy trap to fall into! I think cleansing oils are best for people who want something quick with minimal effort x
