This recipe is a little bit random, there isnโt an awful lot of cooking involved. It’s tortilla chips and a homemade guacamole recipe. Anyone can do that, right? Well, thatโs kind of the point of this one. I feel slightly hypocritical posting this because I publicly talk about my hatred of avocado quite frequently on Twitter. BUT,ย I can sometimes manage guacamole. If itโs spicy enough and the avocado is smooth, and the tortilla chip is good, I momentarily forget itโs avocado and life is good. I apologise to all of you who are reading this while eatingย avocadoย toast.ย ย

Speaking of Twitter, thatโs where the idea of this post came from. A little while ago I saw someone complaining about the number of wraps you get in a packet and if youโre a student/ live alone/ *insert personal situation here*, it can be a lot to get through. I’m sorry I canโt remember who it was, but she had a lot of replies saying they agreed with her. That got me thinking about how a very long time before that (before I had a blog level of long time ago) I read something about meal ideas for leftover wraps. One of the suggestions was to make your own tortilla chips. I donโt know about you, but I love tortilla chips and at the time I thought that was a great idea. So, here I am, maybe three years later, finally making my own.ย
Homemade Tortilla Chips & Guacamole Recipeย ย
As always, the aim is to be as allergy friendly as possible, so todayโs recipe is using gluten free wraps. I’m using leftoverย Bfreeย multigrain wraps I had from the post thatโs coming on Thursday (bean quesadillas). Of course, any wrap will work, but you may need to adjust your cooking time slightly if youโre using gluten wraps. GF ones are a little bit firmer, so I tend to find they crisp up quicker.ย

This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, soy free, nut free and vegan.ย

Homemade Tortilla Chips & Guacamole Recipe
Ingredients
Guacamole
- ยฝ a small red onion chopped
- 1-2 fresh red chillies chopped
- 1 ripe avocado
- 2 ripe cherry tomatoes chopped
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1 tsp chilli oil
Tortilla Chips
- 2 wraps
- 1 tsp chilli oil sub regular olive oil if preferred
- Salt and pepper to taste
- A pinch of chilli flakes optional
Instructions
Guacamole
-
Scoop out the avocado and remove the stone. Mash with a fork until reasonably smooth.
-
Stir in the chopped onion, one chilli and tomatoes.
-
Add the juice from 1 lime and the oil, then season to taste with sea salt, black pepper and more lime juice, if needed.
-
Scatter over the remaining chilli if you like more of a kick.
Tortilla Chips
-
Place a pizza baking tray in the oven. Preheat to 220C/425F/Gas mark 7.
-
Cut the wrap into strips, and then cut each strip into triangles. Brush each triangle with olive oil. Alternatively, evenly coat the triangles with the olive oil in a large bowl. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and your chilli flakes. Or, add a tsp of your choice of spice, if wanted.
-
Place on the baking tray and bake for about 10 minutes until golden and crisp. Keep an eye on them, especially if using GF wraps as they may cook faster.
Serve and enjoy!

Have you guys ever made your own tortilla chips before? What would you season yours with?ย
Until tomorrow,ย

I’ve never made my own tortilla chips before but I think I’m going to try your recipe but I think I would just season than with pepper and salt rather than the chilli flakes. Definitely going to try this recipe!
OMG those tortillas look absolutely amazing! and so good! As for guacamole.. my fav treat to be honest!
I definitely need this post, I had no idea how to make tortilla chips until now. Such a fresh take on chips and guac

Sophie, this recipe looks so utterly delicious that I think I might just forgive you for your publicly stated hatred of avocado (!) I’ve never thought of using wraps as dippers before but we have tons in the store cupboard (Flora used to have them in her packed lunch before she got bored of them). Bookmarking this recipe to try, thank you! Lisa X
How have I never thought to make my own tortilla chips before? I completely agree that there are also too many in a pack and we’re often binning some of the leftovers, which is so wasteful. This is a much better idea! I’d probably have mind with a tomato based chutney or salsa.
Forgot to say – I’m looking forward to your bean quesadillas recipe! I love Mexican style food.
I love guacamole, so thank you for posting this. Will try soon hopefully. X
I’d love to try this guacamole. I’ve only ever really had it once and I wasn’t too keen on it but always happy and willing to try anything twice!

These tortilla chips look great, in fact I have been looking for a good tortilla chips and guacamole recipe to try, so I will have to give this one a go. As for seasoning I would definitely go for the chilli flakes.
Wow! this looks so delicious, I would love preparing this at home. Thanks for sharing.
Iโve never made homemade chips & guac before but I love how simple it seems. Plus it looks delicious! I definitely want to try this out and see the difference between store bought and homemade. Thanks for sharing! (:
I am a HUGE guac fan but have never tried putting chilli in it.. something I’ll have to try next time I make it!
Really like the idea of using left over wraps to make the chips too. I’m the only one in my house who eats them, and I end up throwing several away as I don’t eat them all that often ๐

This looks absolutely delicious. I haven’t tried it out yet, but I think I will make it for my graduation party. I especially love how you made the chips. I think that’s such a great idea that will come in handy when I run out of chips for queso. Thanks for sharing!

One of my favorite snacks is Tortilla Chips with Guacamole. I have never made tortilla chips but I would season the chips with garlic powder and pepper. I don’t know if I have ever had red chilis in my guacamole but your recipe sounds wonderful.
I I love this recipe. What a great idea to use left over wraps that way. I always have left over soft tortillas. I make tostadas out of those. Thanks for sharing!
omg I have never thought about making my own tortilla chips before, I wouldn’t have even thought about using left over wraps to make these, that’s super clever, even living with one other person we often have a few wraps left over so this would be perfect!

I always think that it’s funny how a lot of people will like something but not where it came from, like my best friend in high school hated tomatoes but loved ketchup, it just reminded me of her. ๐ I am always interested in how different people make guacamole because I never really see two people make it alike. I admit I have seen people make chips out of tortillas but it always seemed to involve frying, unfortunately, but baking is such a better option!
