If you’re the kind of person who likes to workout outside, winter is rough. If you’re a runner, cyclist or you just prefer to exercise in your local park rather than at home or in a gym, this post is for you.
My first tip is for everyone but runners and cyclists pay extra attention.
Hydration is so important.
I get it, when you’re about to get sweaty you may think the last thing you want is some greasy moisturiser on your face before you even get started. Here is the thing, sweat is salty, salt equals dehydration, dehydrated skin equals tight, dry and uncomfortable skin. No one wants that, especially as skin is usually drier in winter anyway. If you don’t like the idea of using a thick cream pre-workout maybe try a hydrating serum and see if that works for you.
Don’t forget about your hands.
If you’re outside in winter as a runner or cyclist there’s a good chance you’ll be wearing gloves, but if not make sure you give them some TLC as well. The wind burn issues in winter are so real. Do your hands a favour and use a more intensive balm rather than a regular hand cream.
Or your lips. It’s thin skin, they struggle in winter anyway. If you’re hitting them with cold air at a great speed they’ll thank you (and so will your lipstick later) if you use a good lip balm before you leave the house.

Wear SPF.
Now I feel like we’re all collectively getting better at using SPF in our daily routines. However during winter, when we have about seven hours of daylight it’s easy to forget. Especially when you’re getting ready in the dark. However if you happen to be lucky enough to be able to get that run in daylight, remember the SPF. You might be cold and you’re probably not getting a tan but those UV rays are still damaging in winter.
Back to hydration.
So you’ve looked after your skin before you went out, you applied a hydrating serum or your favourite moisturiser. Don’t forget to rehydrate afterwards too. Hot showers can be very dehydrating as well; don’t forget to apply your moisturisers and a nourishing cleanser again when you’re done.
