Where is Dubai?

Dubai is the wealthiest member of the United Arab Emirates. It is situated along the Persian Gulf and not far from the Arabian Desert. Yes, it is in the Middle East, and yes, some of its wealth comes from the oil industry.

But oil is only half the story. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Dubai started as a small fishing village. It gained more attention for having affordable pearls. Loose laws allowed Indian and Persian merchants to set up shop and continue to trade around the world. Dubai’s location as a port city only increased in value as time went on.

Burj Khalifa

Cities tend to have “who’s bigger?” contests with their skyscrapers and Dubai is no exception. The Burj Khalifa is currently the world’s tallest building with a total height of 829.8 metres. It was built in 2009 with some help from the architects who built the Sears Tower—another skyscraper that once wore the crown. There are viewing platforms from which one can take in the spectacular night views of Dubai.
The building itself also has the Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping mall, inside it, along with several hotels and residences. The mall is so big that it has its own app, as well as an aquarium, several amazing restaurants, and, of course, plenty of shops—both familiar brands and stores unique to the UEA. Burj Khalifa is amazing inside and out!

Dubai Really Likes Water

Remember how we said that Dubai started as a fishing village, then made a mint selling pearls? The aquatic nature of the city has endured through the ages. Like Venice, it has water taxis and water buses. Spectacular fountain shows abound; the main one is every half hour after dark and can be seen from any of the scenic viewpoints in Dubai. It’s that big.

All of this pales in comparison to Dubai’s wildest feat on the water: Palm Island. This stretch of land is entirely man-made, and almost a city unto itself. Its prominent outline can be seen from space. They also have a literal “small world” made out of man-made islands on the sea.

There are even lakes in the middle of the desert! The man-made “Love Lakes” are not far from the sand-buried ghost village. The heart shape of the lakes is only visible from the sky, but they are still an unexpected walk in the park that is even better with a loved one.

And, if you have kids and happen to be on Palm Island anyways, the Atlantis Hotel is a must-see. Not only does it boast an aquarium with over 50,000 fish, but the hotel is also attached to a water park!

Other Tourist Attractions

If the world’s largest mall wasn’t enough shopping, or if you want a bazaar with a modern coat of paint, be sure to check out Deira, Dubai’s business district. When we say “business,” we mean it: the famous “Gold Souk” has over 300 jewellery retailers alone!

The museum may or may not be open when you read this, but given everything else Dubai has to offer, it should be a treat. Are you feeling adventurous? If Aladdin made you want to visit the Middle East, Dubai is the right place for such an excursion. You can travel by camel, Arabian horse, or Jeep on a desert safari. Sandboarding is also an option. There is also a village that remains half-buried in the sand to this day…but we’ll let our readers discover that mystery for themselves.
