This recipe was completely unplanned, and more of a little fun festive play around in the kitchen than a recipe to serve on the day. But I had some chocolate rice pops and thought I could bake with them. After some deliberation, I decided on some chocolate orange rice krispie squares bars. The chocolate orange is there for a little festive flavour, you could make these as plain chocolate ones if you’d prefer.
These bars are a great holiday season treat recipe to make with kids, and they don’t take very long to set so you won’t need much patience before you can tuck in. I absolutely loved Squares bars when I was younger so these treats are really nostalgic. Is anyone else on the same page with that? I can’t remember the last time I made anything like this, so I thought it would be fun!
And at just 142 calories per bar, they’re a fairly low calorie chocolatey treat.
Ingredient Choices
I just want to say that I was a little nervous about making these with vegan marshmallows, some of them don’t have the greatest texture and I was worried they wouldn’t set the same way that regular rice crispy bars do. For reference, I used the M&S Plant Kitchen marshmallows and they worked really well, but other brands may not work the same way.
If you’re struggling to find chocolate rice cereal that’s both vegan and gluten free, the Tesco own brand ones are! Doves Farm also have a puffed rice star cereal that’s both too.

Until next time,

I’m actually not a huge rice krispie treat fan, because they’re a little too plain for me, but with all the flavors in this one it might actually be more my speed!

There is a great take on a classic recipe! I love how you can modify classics such as these to your own dietary needs. Well done!
You know, it’s strange, I’m not a marshmallow fan. But I love rice crispy treats. Go figure. These look marvelous.
Omg yes I used to love those Squares bars when I was younger! These look so good, definitely a nice sweet treat to make. I would probably not include orange in mine though just because I don’t really like orange. I haven’t made rice krispies in so long though. We do usually have these as a little treat for our Boxing day parties that we have with the whole family. Although obviously won’t be happening this year! xx
I am happy to this recipe is gluten-free and vegan. Chocolate and orange are two of my favorite flavor combinations.
