I’ve made vegan French toast using a chia egg before, but I know that chia seeds aren’t everyone’s favourite. And I recently picked up some Oggs liquid egg replacer, I was struggling to choose what to make with it. Then I thought it was time for an updated French toast recipe. I don’t know if I was feeling like choosing more indulgent options just because it’s nearly Christmas, but my French toast quickly became a chocolate French toast recipe.
French toast? Made with eggs, milk and butter usually? But vegan and gluten free? Yes.

Nutritional Information
I’m not going to focus too much on the vitamins and minerals for this one as there are too many variables. Depending on the brand of bread, dairy alternative brands etc, the information could fluctuate a lot.
However, this recipe contains approximately 211 kcal per serving, 3g of fibre and 7g of protein (bread choices can make this fluctuate massively). It’s also a source of several B vitamins.

Egg replacer
The egg replacer says 50ml is the equivalent of one egg. I wanted the equivalent of 1 large egg, so opted for 60ml instead. The brand I opted for is simply a conveniently packaged aquafaba, so you can use that instead if you can’t get your hands on the carton.
If you want to try alternatives, it will definitely work with a chia or flax egg, although they do alter the taste and texture more. I’ve never tried this with a powdered egg replacer. Let me know how it turns out if you try it!
Vegan chocolate French Toast Recipe
A vegan and gluten free alternative to the classic French toast made with vegan egg replacer and chocolate for a more indulgent breakfast.
This recipe is vegan, gluten free, dairy free and nut free. It does contain soy.

Vegan chocolate French toast recipe
Ingredients
- 60 ml Oggs egg replacer or aquafaba
- 40 ml chocolate soy milk
- 20 ml vegan double cream I used Elmlea Plant
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 thick slices GF bread
- 1 tbsp vegan butter
- Icing sugar chopped nuts and berries to serve (optional)
Instructions
-
Whisk together the vegan egg replacer, milk, cream, vanilla and cocoa powder. Lay the bread slices in a single layer in a shallow dish and pour the liquid mixture over them. Allow to soak for 2-3 mins, then carefully turn over and soak for 2 mins more.
-
Heat the vegan butter in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat until foaming. Carefully lift 2 slices of the soaked bread out of the dish and add to the frying pan. Fry for 3 mins on each side, until golden and crisp, then place on a plate, ready to serve. Add any toppings you wish.
Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Yes, the cuisine box says Italian, not French. This dish dates back to the Roman Empire.
