Revolution Veil Face & Body Foundation Review | Lightest Shade F0.2

It’s been a hot minute since my last foundation review for a couple of reasons. As you guys know, I’m attempting to go cruelty free and I’ve been putting some extra effort into using up some of my non-cruelty free options. And I thought the foundation we’re talking about today could be a dupe for one of my favourite foundations. Today, we’re going to be going through my Revolution Veil Face & Body Foundation Review in the lightest shade, 0.2 on dry skin. 

Brand overview  

I’m sure we all know who Revolution are by now, and the other brands associated with them. This launch is from the flagship brand, Makeup Revolution, founded in 2013. They’re known for their affordability and dupes of high end products.

Product overview 

This foundation comes with a lot of product, it’s 120ml for £15, which is absolutely incredible. 

It contains vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. It claims to be lightweight and buildable coverage. All of the Revolution brands are cruelty free, and this foundation is also vegan.  

Shade range  

It only comes in 15 shades, which is extremely poor. However, those 15 shades range from 0.2 to F20, so the range covered is quite wide even if there are some large gaps between shades.  

I’m on the fence about this one. While as someone who is usually paler than a brand’s lightest shade, I’m appreciative of the fact they’ve tried to cover a wide spectrum, I’m also very sceptical as to how many people will be able to find a good match with only 15 shades, especially if you are trying to use this as body makeup. And this is a brand that typically excels in this area, with their other flagship foundations offering up to 55 shades, 15 feels pitiful. I’m not necessarily expecting the same number for a new launch as the flagships, but I’d expect at least 20-25 from a brand like Revolution.

I have the lightest shade, 0.2, so we’ll compare the swatches with some of the other foundations in my collection.  

Unfortunately, I’m writing this in late July, after a few weeks of sun here in the UK and have a slight tan on my arms right now so the swatches aren’t true tone to my regular skin colour to get an accurate gauge of how it compares. But the XX Revolution swatch is almost my exact skin colour on a regular day, for reference.

First Impressions  

As I mentioned, I thought this was going to be a potential dupe for a favourite of mine. That favourite is the MUFE Water Blend. That foundation has a gel-like texture, sheer to light coverage. It’s basically no-makeup makeup and offers very little coverage but gives your skin a light tint and a very healthy glow. That’s what I was expecting from this one. Or at least something similar.  

And I couldn’t have been more wrong.  

This foundation is thicker and creamier than I was expecting, has a much heavier texture and more coverage. 

And that heavier texture showed on the skin straight away. First impressions weren’t great, it wasn’t sitting well, it was harder to blend than most. The level of fluidity I’m used to wasn’t there, even from heavier foundations. Back to the drawing board. 

Application 

Brush 

I’m sure I’m in the majority here when I say that I use my favourite products when I’m trying something for the first time. For me, that was using the Zoeva 102 Silk Finish Brush, over the La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50 and no primer. It was difficult to blend, I had to try really hard not to get streaks out. In terms of texture, it gripped to every time bit, even stuff that wasn’t visible to the naked eye. Not successful. 

As with every new foundation, if I don’t like it on first application, there are other application methods and products to layer it with.  

Sponge 

It’s much easier to try a new application method than switch out a favourite SPF, so I tried it with a beauty blender next. The results were much the same. It clung to the texture less when I first applied it, but after a couple of hours it looked the same. Patchiness was starting to show up, it was separating around the drier areas of my face and gathering/ looking heavy in others.  

More attempts 

Third time, I tried exfoliating my face with the REN AHA tonic, using my SPF and used a brush on half of my face and a sponge on the other half. It went on really smooth and I thought we had a winner, baby smooth skin and it’s fine. Until you’ve been wearing it for three hours and then it starts to break up again. 

I tried it a couple more times with different SPFs and application methods and different skin preps. Waited for a lower humidity day and tried it again as it had been warmer when I first tried it. Each method brought the same results.  

Just as I’d reached the point where I was about to give up, I tried a skin prep method I used when I l was at uni. Back then I lived in an apartment block with extremely high humidity and poor ventilation and the method that worked to keep the makeup on my face without making my skin dry was La Roche Posay Serozinc, then a dry touch SPF followed by a hydrating foundation. It was worth a shot. I’d used an exfoliating toner the night before, then prepped my skin as I just described. My skin was soft, smooth and felt like velvet. The foundation applied better than any other method, it was blending better, it looked flawlessly smooth. Perfect.  

Then I went for a long walk, came back home, did a little work, then went to the bathroom and checked out my makeup. It had been about five hours, and it looked exactly the same as it typically did after three.  

I wish I could say there was a method that worked, but I’ve pretty much given up here. As it looks better on smoother skin, I think if you have clear, smooth and normal to slightly oily skin you might get better wear. But that’s a very specific skin type. And if you do have normal, perfectly clear and totally smooth skin, 1) you’re very lucky 2) you’re probably not looking for a foundation like this anyway.  

Coverage 

I was somewhat surprised by the coverage of this one. As it’s a face and body, I was expecting coverage to be quite light and fluid. It’s thicker than I thought it would be, more creamy than gel-like, which was also a surprise. And I’d say this is medium coverage. Although I do think this blends a little better if you try to sheer this out a little bit to light to medium coverage. 

Wear  

Poor. Even on the days where I thought I’d managed to get a nice smooth application, it still started to look heavy and separate after a few hours. A couple of days I wore this, I attempted to put it on and go about my day and only check in a few hours later when I got home. Every single time I was horrified about how bad my makeup looked when I returned.  

On dry skin  

I honestly don’t recommend this one for dry skin at all. The way this foundation clings to texture, it isn’t well suited to any kind of irritated or flaky skin. The only way I found this wore reasonably well on my skin is after I’d exfoliated, but even then, it didn’t wear well beyond the 3-4 hours mark. I can’t imagine a situation where this foundation is appropriate. Even foundations without the best wear time still typically last 6-7 hours, which is good enough for an evening dinner/ drinks situation even if it doesn’t get a full day of wear time. This one? I’ve got nothing. Maybe it would be better on normal to slightly oily skin, but it has to be baby smooth.  

Overall  

I can’t recall a time that I’ve ended a review without a single positive to talk about. Even the shade range, although wide in terms of light to dark, is limited in terms of number of shades, so that doesn’t feel like a positive worth talking about either.  

Despite my best efforts to make this work, I’d give this foundation a 2/10 at best.

Would I repurchase? 

Unfortunately, absolutely not. I can’t see myself getting even close to finishing this one unless I find another foundation in my collection that mixes well with this one – a complete fail.
