When I found out that I couldn’t eat gluten anymore, I told myself that over time I’d eventually go back and make all of my old favourite vegan recipes gluten free as well. In my first ever Recipe A Day May series I made a batch of vegan chocolate orange brownies. Well, it’s Christmas time and it’s the perfect time to share my gluten free vegan chocolate orange brownies recipe.
For some reason, this was a little harder than I expected. I’ve made a few gluten free brownies recipes now, but this one took a few more attempts to get right. However, this the third or fourth attempt at the recipe. And I’ve been adapting it since last winter. then finally made a batch I was happy with, then I was too eager to cut them, made a mess of them, and couldn’t get any good photos.
So, rest assured, this one is as close to perfect as it can get. And please wait until they cool before you decide to try one. Please.
But if you can’t wait, the top will crack, but you’ll get a runny chocolate stream inside that looks a bit like this. Your choice.

Ingredients
They contain orange chocolate, fresh juice and peel, orange oil and orange chocolate so they truly taste like Christmas, and are far richer than my original batch with gluten.
Nutritional Information
Obviously, a brownie doesn’t have a lot going for it in terms of vitamins worth talking about. They only contain 3g of protein each, and 3.7g of fibre (which is actually a pretty good amount for a brownie), and next to nothing in terms of vitamins and minerals.
However, cocoa is a good source of iron, so both the chocolate and cocoa powder provide a little bit. Each brownie contains just under 2mg of iron. In the UK, the NHS recommends the following amounts of iron to be consumed daily:
- 8.7mg a day for men over 18.
- 14.8mg a day for women aged 19 to 50.
- 8.7mg a day for women over 50.

Gluten Free Vegan Orange Chocolate Brownies Recipe
A gooey chocolate orange brownie recipe, perfect for Christmas snacks and gatherings – maybe not this year though.
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, vegan and nut free. It does contain soy.

Gluten Free Vegan Orange Chocolate Brownies Recipe
Ingredients
- 175 g golden caster
- 100 g GF oat flour
- 70 g GF self raising flour
- 4 tbsp cocoa powder/ raw cacoa
- Juice and peel of one orange
- 1 scant cup chocolate soy milk
- 180 g orange dark chocolate
- 1 tsp orange oil
- 4 tbsp sunflower oil
- 4 tbsp candied orange peel
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 180°c and line a baking tin with greaseproof paper.
-
Sieve the flour and cacao powder into a large mixing bowl then stir in the sugar and orange zest and candied orange pieces.
-
Melt the chocolate either in a microwave or in a heatproof bowl over a pan of boiling water. If you're using a microwave, check it every 15 seconds to make sure it doesn’t burn.
-
Put the orange juice in a measuring cup then top the cup up with chocolate soy milk until you have one full cup of liquid in total.
-
Stir in the cup of liquid, sunflower oil, orange oil, and melted chocolate. Mix thoroughly to combine.
-
Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking tin and place in the oven for 20-25 minutes. When done they should be cooked on the outside and slightly gooey in the centre.
-
Leave to cool for 5-10 minutes then place on a wire cooling rack before slicing.
Serve and enjoy!
Do you like the sound of these chocolate orange brownies? When it comes to festive food do you prefer mint chocolate or orange chocolate?
Until next time,
Sophie
I’m not gluten-free either, but fudgy brownies are the best and these look SO good!
Oh so good recipe
Sounds delicious
xx
I love that you keep trying a recipe out until it works. Ooooh you can never go wrong with incorporating some fresh peel. It is great that this is a great source of iron. I like the ingredient list too – healthier gluten or non-vegan alternatives! Thanks for sharing this recipe 🙂

I haven’t had brownies in so long, these look amazing though, the runny chocolate in the middle looks so delicious! I usually prefer mint over orange, or usually I just go for a plain chocolate. I think brownies will be on my list to bake for Christmas this year, they really are a great treat. Although I do usually end up eating way too many of them when I do make them! xx
