A vegan Nutella loaf recipe. I have no idea where this idea came from, other than I remember being in Café Nero desperately typing this idea down in my phone because I didn’t have my planner with me and really didn’t want to forget. Then I kinda did forget. It was the only May recipe idea I had stored on my phone, so I forgot the note was even saved. Then I found it one day, mentioned it to the people I was with and suddenly they were very excited about the idea and me figuring out how I was going to make it became a matter of urgency. I hope you like the idea as much as they did!
Vegan Nutella
Little disclaimer: this ‘vegan Nutella loaf’ is obviously not made with actual Nutella. And yes, Nutella is a brand name, but ‘GF Vegan Nature’s Store Chocolate Hazelnut Spread Loaf Recipe’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it?
And that’s another thing, as you can tell by the last sentence, I did buy my chocolate spread. You can opt to make your own at home and that will be healthier than buying it in a jar. I’ll leave a few links to some recipe options in case anyone wants to do that.

Healthier Ingredients
Speaking of healthier, as Nutella loaf obviously isn’t going to be the healthiest thing in the world, I wanted to make the loaf part slightly healthier if I could. My first thought was banana bread. As I’m sure many of you know as I’ve mentioned it 30000 times by now, I hate banana. So, I opted for an applesauce version instead. I’ve subbed applesauce for bananas in the past, so I was confident I could make it work. I also opted for GF oat flour as the base rather than a processed white flour. Not only is this slightly healthier, but gives the loaf a lighter, fluffier texture which helps it not get too heavy with the Nutella in there.
I opted to make baby loaves and the mix produced enough for three small loaves, roughly enough for one medium, average sized loaf tin. Each small loaf tin makes four slices. You may end up with fewer slices if you made a medium loaf purely because of how thin the slices would have to be.

GF Vegan Nutella Loaf Recipe
This recipe is gluten free and vegan. It does contain nuts and I used vanilla soy milk, you could easily make it soy free if you opt for another non-dairy alternative.

GF Vegan Nutella Loaf Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 flax egg 1 tbsp ground flaxseed, 3 tbps water
- 225 g applesauce I used smooth applesauce to make the loaf a smoother texture
- 1 ½ tbsp sunflower oil
- ¼ cup golden caster sugar
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 90 ml vanilla soy milk
- 70 g ground almonds
- 80 g GF oat flour 5/8 cup
- 50 g GF oats approximately ½ cup
- 6 heaped tsp chocolate spread
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 175C (350F) and line a loaf tin (or smaller ones) with greaseproof paper.
-
Prepare flax egg in a large mixing bowl and let rest for 5 minutes.
-
Add the applesauce, mash smooth with a fork if necessary. Then add remaining wet ingredients, other than the chocolate spread, stir to combine. Add the dry ingredients and stir well to combine.
-
Pour mix into the loaf tin until half full, spread one heaped tsp of chocolate spread (x3 if using one loaf tin) through the centre. Fill to the top, then swirl another tsp of chocolate spread through the top.
-
Place in the centre of the oven for 35 minutes, or until golden and a skewer comes out of the centre clean. Cooking time will be around an hour for one medium sized loaf. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
Serve and enjoy!

I was so happy with how these turned out! What do you guys think of this recipe? Is this something you can see yourself trying at home?
Until tomorrow,
Sophie

This looks really good 🙂 I tried using GF flour in the UK but the resulting dough was terrible. I used xantham gum but it didn’t help. What brand of oat GF flour did you use?

I’ve made a banana loaf before (I’ve never used applesauce though!) with chocolate chips in and it was good, but I never thought about using nutella/chocolate spread! That sounds so gooey and delicious, I’m going to have to try it! I just made a banana loaf earlier this week as well, I feel like I missed out on a great recipe

I am definitely up for trying this, I’m thinking of making something a little unhealthy this weekend, so this might be a good one to try. I’m actually a massive fan of banana bread haha, I make it a lot, and whenever it’s done I find it so hard to stop myself from eating it all!
