If you saw my exciting diet update post earlier this year, you’ll know that I can finally eat vegan cheese. This summer marked my seventh anniversary of eating a vegan diet and throughout that time, coconut has always given me major skin issues so vegan cheese was something I had to live without (except Nush almond milk cream cheese – love you guys). As for a favourite vegan cheese? I don’t think I have one yet.

Seven years is a long time to have only tried two or three options. And when I realised I could eat it again, I found one I liked and pretty much stuck with it. In my time not being able to eat the vast majority of vegan cheeses, I’ve read some pretty awful things about them, so when I found one that worked for me, I wasn’t in a hurry to try countless others that could all be a major disappointment.
My cheese selection currently consists of the aforementioned Nush, which is predominantly used for desserts anyway, and the vegan Applewood. The end. Now, as happy as my Applewood, pesto and sundried tomato toasties make me, I know I’m probably missing out and need to try some alternatives. At the same time, after seven years, trying a plethora of options for the first time feels overwhelming.
Thankfully, hopefully to avoid disappointment, Holland & Barrett have compiled a list of 8 of the best vegan cheeses to create a vegan cheeseboard this Christmas. And while my vegan cheese tastebuds aren’t developed enough yet at this stage to be attempting my own cheese board, I have had a browse through looking for some recommendations.
New Cheese Options
There’s plenty of variety to choose from, including a couple I could have eaten before my coconut issues were resolved which is great to see. Top of my list to try would be the Honestly Tasty – Shamembert, which is made with shea butter, rice bran oil and almonds. If a camembert alternative isn’t for you, next on my personal must try list is the Julienne Bruno – Burrella; a milder option, which feels like a safer choice for those new to cheese alternatives (talking about myself here).
Have you ever attempted a vegan cheese board? If so, which are your favourites to include?
Until next time,
Sophie
