After completing my first project pan last year and talking constantly about transitioning to only CF beauty, I thought I’d check in and share some 2022 beauty goals, where I’m at with the CF transition, and am I doing project pan again this year?
One of the main goals of trying project pan last year was to try to use up as much of my non-CF beauty as possible and wipe the slate clean going into 2022. If you saw my project pan wrap up, you’ll know that didn’t quite happen as planned. I haven’t purchased any products tested on animals since 2020, but those powder products seem to last forever, even with the best intentions of finishing them.
The silver lining? Attempting to use mainly things I wasn’t planning on repurchasing gave me plenty of opportunities to reflect on the items I do want/ need to keep.
Am I doing project pan 2022?

Officially, no, I’m not participating this year. However, there will be a couple of CF update posts along the way. Last year, I used the same powder blush around 75% of the time I did my makeup. It’s a shade I like, and an item I wanted to finish, but I have dry skin and typically use creams more. I don’t want to force myself to use something again when there’s no legitimate need.
There was a day over the Christmas period that I looked in the mirror and realised that it was the first time I’d loved my makeup in a long time, and it made me realise that doing project pan had put me off products I’d previously enjoyed using – definitely not the goal when I opted to try it.
I have a few powder eyeshadow palettes and blushes that will get used in their own good time. While I’m stricter with expiry dates when it comes to liquids and skincare, an older blush really isn’t the end of the world, nor is it going to destroy my skin. I’m not going to pressure myself to finish my powders.
2022 Beauty Goals
A mini project pan?
In 2021 I had a ruthless cull of my skincare products. I threw out everything I knew I wouldn’t use up before it expired, all of those mediocre products I’d been hanging onto etc. The majority of my skincare was already CF/vegan and that cull left me with only a handful of products that aren’t.
I typically take clear out my beauty twice a year: Christmas/ New Year time and my birthday, which is in July. My mini project pan goal is for those few remaining products to be gone by my birthday clear out. And hopefully, with the transition, there won’t actually be a need to throw anything away this summer.
My ‘project pan’ goal for 2022 is to end the year with only a few leftover powder products that aren’t CF and nothing else other than the few products I’m keeping.
Animal Tested Products I’m Keeping
When I announced I was planning on going CF, I said I was planning on keeping a handful of products that aren’t cruelty free. My skin is dry, extremely sensitive and very pale. Some of my ‘safety’ products when my skin is at its most burning/ peeling sensitive state are not CF. And because they’re what I use when my skin is its most fragile, I’m not intending to potentially damage myself further by trying new things when I have something that works.
The products I’m keeping fall into two categories, things I’m planning to keep and things that I am open to replacing if the right product falls into my lap.
Things I’m Definitely Keeping
Over the course of the year, the number of items I thought would be on this list reduced dramatically. As it currently stands, there are three items, and they’re all La Roche Posay skincare items.
- Serozinc
- Effaclar Duo
- Cicaplast Baume

The other stuff:
- Laura Mercier Flawless Lumiere – Every foundation this brand has ever made melts perfectly into my skin. They never cause me any irritation, even when my skin is sensitive from another product, they always wear beautifully, they just work. Initially, I thought I was going to be keeping both Flawless Lumiere and Flawless Fusion. But I have dry skin and as wonderful as the matte sister to this foundation is, I don’t think I need to keep both if I’m trying to transition to CF. However, I don’t have a matte foundation that sits anywhere near as beautifully as that one does. And I’m making the decision to not repurchase it in winter, when I absolutely do not need anything matte near my face. I may end up changing my mind on that come summertime.
- Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Powder Foundation – This is the only powder foundation I’ve ever seen that makes my dry skin look smooth and without texture all year round. It never looks too dry/ matte and it’s perfect for those light makeup/ just a little something quick days. If I happen to find another incredible one that doesn’t irritate my skin and is pale enough, I’ll say goodbye. Until then, I would repurchase this if/ when I hit pan.
- La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 50 – I’ve found a replacement SPF for dry skin, but I don’t currently have a formula that’s dry touch/ summer friendly. I finished one of these in 2021 so don’t currently have one. I’m hoping to find a good one by summer so I don’t have to repurchase this, but I am willing to get another of these if I haven’t found one that works for me by then.
I’ll no longer be talking about non CF products on my blog, so I’m basically sharing this small list of items as a way to hold myself accountable so I don’t accidentally repurchase something that isn’t cruelty free without thinking.
Are any of you participating in project pan this year? Or do you know of any cruelty free alternatives to any of the items I’m keeping? All suggestions are welcome!
Until next time,
Sophie
Love that you have beauty goals for 2022! I am so bad a actually finishing my products (With the exception of foundations). I def need to work on using what I have and buying less products!

Doing a cleansing like that is such a good idea! We tend to hold on to products we barely ever (or never) use and then they just sit there, expiring one after the other…

it’s very important you care about your skin. using beauty products you can glow your skin and look beautiful. The information you provide is very useful.
Great beauty goals! I like that I am not the only one who has products that seem to last forever… Most of my makeup is Charlotte Tilbury which has the Leaping Bunny cert and I use skincare from The Ordinary that’s on PETA’s list. Still a lot to improve but I am getting there. You will too!
My skin does not respond well to Effaclar Duo, but I adore La Roche Posay sunscreen. Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder is a must-have for me. I bought it several times.
