A million years ago, I shared a recipe for my festive crunch granola. Today’s vegamas recipe is an updated chocolate orange granola recipe. It has a lot in common with the first recipe. That one which had orange flavours and chocolate chunks, but this one has chocolate clusters too. And I made it with my homemade date syrup, so it’s slightly healthier & more indulgent at the same time.
I mentioned in the first recipe that making a batch of that granola is sort of my way of allowing the festive season to enter my door – something I typically put off for as long as possible. So, Merry Christmas, I guess? Anyway, I think this recipe is a great breakfast option all year with the healthy fats and dried fruit. But it’s a nice way to nudge the festive door slightly ajar before you’re fully ready for mince pie season.

Nutritional Information
As with all of my granola recipes, this one is higher in fat because I like to go heavy on the nuts. They’re good fats. But, if you wanted less grams of fat per serving for any other dietary reasons, you could pad the recipe out with extra oats or some rice puffs. Just remember you’ll need extra syrup if you’re adding extra dry ingredients.
Served as per the recipe below, this granola contains 210 calories per serving, just under 10g of fat and 5g each of protein and fibre. It also contains around 10% of the RDA of omega 3 per serving, and 20% for omega 6.
Chocolate Orange Granola Recipe
I found it easier to separate the oats in half, then add the cocoa powder to the chocolate half and put roughly half of each of the remaining ingredients in each bowl. The chocolate half actually takes a couple of extra minutes to cook, so if you mix that half first and put it in the oven, then use the same bowl to mix the ‘plain’ half, they should be ready at the same time.
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, oil free, vegan and can be soy free depending on your choice of chocolate. It does contain nuts.

Chocolate Orange Granola Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups GF rolled oats divided in two ¾ cup portions
- 50 g pistachio kernels
- 50 g pecans
- 20 g dried cranberries
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 75 g pitted dates
- 150 ml water
- 2 tbsp orange extract
- 40 g dark chocolate to serve optional
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 180°c
-
Add one half of the oats to a mixing bowl and stir in the cocoa powder until the oats are evenly coated. Stir in half of the remaining dry ingredients.
-
Blend the dates, orange extract and water together then transfer the liquid to a small saucepan. On a low heat, warm the date mixture through for a few minutes until lukewarm. Stir regularly and do not allow to boil.
-
Once warm, pour half of the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir until fully combined.
-
Spread mixture in a thin, even layer over a baking tray (you may need two). Place in the centre of the oven
-
After the chocolatey granola is in the oven, mix together the remaining dry ingredients and coat in the date mix as you did for the previous steps. Then place the second tray of ‘plain’ granola in the oven for 25 minutes until granola is golden brown and crunchy. This should give the chocolate batch around 30 minutes, and 25 minutes for the plain.
-
Once both trays are ready, combine the two batches and, once cool, store in an airtight container. You can add the chocolate chunks once the granola has cooled if you wish to include them.
Serve and enjoy!

This looks heavenly! I’m definitely going to try this recipe out soon. I’m trying to eat 100% vegan but chocolate is my downfall so I’m always on the look out for nice vegan treat recipes!

This looks absolutely amazing! I love nutty granolas and will definitely be giving this a go this winter.
I’m not a huge fan of chocolate orange (I’m not an orange fan tbh) but sometimes you have to roll with the seasonal flavours! And it looks like it balances perfectly with all that nutty goodness.
My favourite Christmas inspired breakfast dish….I’m not sure I have one? Does having a box of the special christmas biscuits for breakfast count?
This looks and sounds delicious! I have to admit I’m not much of a cook and have never tried to make my own granola, but I do love it and have it all the time for breakfast so I’m definitely going to give this a go when I’m home for Christmas!

There is something about the combination of chocolate and orange that SCREAMS the holidays for me! This sounds incredible!
I’d never have thought about making my own granola. I love granola sprinkles in yoghurt but it’s always a fruity one. I’d love to try a chocolate one as a treat though! x
