โVegans have really bad teethโ. If youโve ever seen one of those โ10 reasons why going vegan is bad for your healthโ lists/ videos, youโve probably come across that sentence before. The general argument is that due to the higher amounts of fruits/ vegetables, vegan diets can beย more acidic and sugary. Therefore, if youโre vegan, your teeth are going to be awful. I hope weโre all rational enough here to know all that really means all you have to do is take care of your teeth and have good oral hygiene. Just like everyone elseโฆ but if youโre vegan and looking for ways to protect your teeth, or happen to eat a lot of acidic food, keep reading.ย ย
Do Vegans Have Bad Teeth?ย
While vegans donโt get more cavities etc, we are more prone to acid erosion if our teeth arenโt properly looked after. A very simple way to avoid acid erosion is to avoid brushing your teeth straight after eating acidic food and use toothpaste that protects enamel. So, protect your teeth,ย as everyone should. Of course, this doesnโt just apply to vegans โ there are lots of other people eating healthy diets with lots of fresh fruit who have to take the same precautions.ย ย
How To Keep Healthy Teeth As aย Veganย
- Donโt brush straight after really acidic foodย
- Maintain good oral hygieneย
- Useย a toothpasteย that protects enamelย
- Look for products with xylitolย ย

Whatโs Xylitol? ย
Essentially, xylitol is a sugar substitute. Itโs a sugar alcohol that doesnโt raise blood sugar, so can often be found in sugar free sweets*ย and is seen as a healthier alternative. But itโs great for dental health too. Not only is it better for your teeth than sugar, it also protects your teeth.ย
Some studies have found that xylitol can prevent tooth decay. The oral bacteria (sorry, I know that sounds gross) feed on glucose, but they canโt โfeedโ on xylitol. So, using xylitol instead essentially starves the bacteria.ย ย
A lot of chewing gums and toothpastes contain xylitol to help protect your teeth, including the Nano Whitening Toothpaste from Whitewash Laboratories**.ย
Xylitol Toothpasteย
I was recently sent some products fromย WhiteWashย Laboratories to try. When the box arrived, I knew it was coming, but didnโt know exactly what they were sending, so I was very excited to unbox it.ย ย
They sent over a couple of different toothpastes, a whitening kit and some floss.ย Their products are vegan (aย lotย ofย big nameย dental brands arenโt), paraben, alcohol and SLS free.ย
And as for protecting teeth, their whitening toothpaste contains xylitol as the 4thย ingredient, so quite high concentration to protect against acid and enamel erosion.ย ย
The Nano range also includes their Gold Particle Whitening Toothpaste, which contains xylitol as well. This toothpaste contains little flecks of gold, which feels rather fancy first thing on a morning. All products are formulated by UK dentists and are safe to use on your enamel without being too harsh. Perfect for vegans (or anyone) looking to protect against an acidic diet.ย ย ย
Iโve only used the whitening strips once so far, but I have quiteย sensitiveย teeth usually and havenโt experienced any issues with any of these products.ย You can currently get 25% off too!

This MonthโฆI Tried A Newย Toothpaste?ย
Okay, so this has nothing to do with being vegan. And itโs completely off topic from enamel erosion and xylitol. Oh, and โThis Monthโ has a new home now. But Iโve spoken to a few of you on Twitter before about increased gum sensitivity and issues with gums around that time of the month. And I thought that deserved a mentionย while I was talking about sensitivity.ย ย
This box of products arrived a few days before my last period when Iโd usually be very hesitant to try new dental products because my gums are so sensitive for those few days. But, hello, it was gold toothpaste?!ย I started using the gold toothpaste the following day and other than one pesky ulcer, I havenโt had any gum sensitivity this month at all. Usually my gums are very inflamed for those few days, and sometimes bleed a little when I brush and I saw no signs of that this month. And as for the bleeding, Iโve spoken to my dentist about this before, I donโt have gum disease; I know some of you were probably thinking that. Itโs the hormones, apparently, itโs a known issue โ thatโs why pregnant women get free dental care in the UK. Yet another thing on the things they donโt tell you about periods list.ย ย
Anyway, as I know some of you experience similar issues, Iโd highly recommend trying it for that.ย ย

Have you tried any of these products before? And ladies, do any of you experience gum sensitivity around that time of the month?ย
You can use code โSOPHIE10โ for 10% off your WhiteWash order!
Until next time,ย

**The dental products in this post were gifted by WhiteWash Labs. All opinions are my own.
I’ve never heard this!
Yeeeeeees! I also, I had gum disease but it cleared up about a year and a half ago after I started eating way less sugar and then I’ve found that my gums bleed during my week break from the pill! I asked my dentist about this on my last visit and she said that it was probably linked to hormones.
Gold toothpaste sounds like so much fun and I’m super jealous because I have prescription toothpaste (I have had lots and lots of dental issues!) so I’m not allowed to use other toothpastes ๐
I’m also more than a little flabbergasted that people think vegans have bad teeth…like what?! As you said….the fruit and veg argument applies to anyone with a healthy lifestyle regardless of animal product consumption.
I’ve never heard that vegan has bad teeth stereotype before and I’m shook because hygiene is supposed to be taken care of by everyone regardless of what you eat lol
This is such an interesting blog post, I have never thought about this before, or heard or tried any of those products, but I will be looking them up now.
That is not something I knew. But I guess if it is down to acid erosion it can happen to anybody if they eat a lot of fruit. Thanks for sharing this product.
I’ve tried these years ago and they worked well for me x
I’ve never even heard of this “misconception” before. I mean, anyone can have bad teeth – Vegan or no Vegan? I feel like it’s just one more thing that people use against Vegans. For some weird reason. This toothpaste sounds good though!
Exactly! I think it’s just one of those things like vitamin deficiencies, anyone can be lacking something in their diet, but vegans are an easy target. People love to complain
I have been so used to looking at ingredients, seeing xylitol and thinking negatively as it is something dogs cannot have! But is sounds like it is amazing for your teeth! After reading this I definitely want to try this brand as I have been wanting to try teeth whiting for a while now and who doesn’t want gold bits in their toothpaste? #bougie
Thanks for the review xx
I really rate the Nano range, they’re really nice products x
Wow I didn’t even know about this misconception! Seems like people love to pin anything they can on vegans for some reason. Love the sound of this product though xx

This is a really interesting post, I’d never heard that assumption before- I guess it kind of makes sense but you could say that about healthy people who eat lots of fruit too! I’ve not tried Nano before but have only heard good things!

I’ve never heard the stereotype of vegans having bad teeth before. That’s ridiculous, anyone can have bed teeth if they have poor oral hygiene. This tooth paste sounds interesting, especially the gold flecked one.
