Hi guys, welcome back to Strictly Seasonal. Now, if you’ve been keeping up with these posts you’ll know that the last couple have been slightly seasonal rather than strictly. I wanted to fix that so today’s post contains one ingredient, one seasonal ingredient. Today I’m making kale chips, I know that’s hardly revolutionary, but this was the first time I’d made them.
I thought kale chips would be great because I’m a snacker, I like to have something to nibble on throughout the day and it doesn’t necessarily have to be anything of substance. Kale chips are light, reasonably healthy and easy to make.
Although they’re easy, making them is a balancing act. You need the kale to be dry so that it isn’t soggy, but you also need to get the oil levels right so that it crisps up. The oven needs to be hot enough to cook them, but kale is really thin, so it can’t be too hot that it burns. One thing that doesn’t need balancing too much is the seasoning. Kale alone has quite a strong flavour and although you can make them simply salted, they definitely taste better if you add something with a stronger flavour.
I made mine with chilli flakes and coated in tamari first. Tamari burns very easily, which would usually be a bad thing in terms of seasoning, but in this case it helps the kale crisp up.
The following measurements are rough guidelines, you can adapt as necessary. I added my kale to a baking tray then added the appropriate amount of seasoning so the amount of kale in the recipe is an educated guess.
This recipe is dairy free, gluten free, nut free and vegan.

Chilli Kale Chips Recipe
Ingredients
- 50 g curly kale
- 2 tsp olive oil
- 1 tsp tamari
- ½ tsp garlic salt
- 1 tsp chilli flakes
Instructions
Prep the kale:
-
Preheat oven to 300 °F/ 150 °C and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
-
Wash and thoroughly dry your kale. Ideally you only want the leaves, so you may need to cut some of the stems out. Those bits are quite bitter and wont cook as well as the leaves.
-
Add kale to a medium mixing bowl then add in the olive oil and tamari and massage gently to evenly coat.
-
Transfer the kale to the baking tray then evenly sprinkle the garlic salt and chilli flakes over.
-
Place in the centre of the oven for approximately 10 minutes until kale is crispy. Different kinds of kale cook at different rates so expect the kale chips to take anywhere from 8 to 13 minutes. Remove from oven and serve immediately.
Serve and enjoy!

Have you ever tried kale chips before? Could you see yourself snacking on them throughout the day? Let me know your favourite snacks down below!
Until next time,
Sophie
Have never tried these before, I’ve had kale just not this way. Will need to give it a try. I love seaweed chips, haha. Some find that gross, but they’re actually quite nice. Hope you have a great day lovely x
Oh wow, they’re super quick to make and sound delicious! Perfect for work lunches!
KALE CHIPS! I love love love making Kale chips, they’re the perfect thing to munch and snack on! And yes you are so right on it being a balancing act, leave them in the oven for too long and that’s It, rest in peace kale chips, but take them out too early they don’t have the proper crunch to them.
I don’t think I’ve ever added chills flakes to them? I’m going to save this and report back haha – just have to make sure I don’t go overload on the chilling flakes!

great post! this would be a really good recipe for me to try because i’m very bad at eating my vegetables. having them crisped up and seasoned would make it easier for me to eat and enjoy my veggies. my brother makes something similar to this but with broccoli, which surprisingly even my golden retriever enjoys! i’ll have to tell him about this recipe. thanks for sharing sophie! xx

I love kale chips because I don’t really like kale, but making it into crisps transforms it into something amazing! I have made them before but I have to admit I usually just buy them, haha. I love your addition of chilli flakes and tamari, I’ll have to try that 🙂

Yummy this recipe sounds delicious!!
We’ve never tried kale crisps before but we have recently been trying to get into eating them in our meals, they sound so healthy to snack on but also so complicated to make in the sense of getting them just right!
Will defo have to try as usually we have much left over from dishes we make!

Every time I’ve tried kale I’ve REALLY enjoyed it but I can’t say I’ve ever gone out of my way to eat it or buy it for anything. I’m definitely a snacker, too so these sound perfect but I’m also really not the best at cooking or common knowledge with food so I’d probably end up burning it all and being like ‘yep, that’s great’ hahaha. I think salted would probably be my favourite as I am such a fiend for salted foods!

Ooooooh I love Kale! I’m always looking for inventine ways to eat it so I’m definitely going to give this recipe a go! xxxx
Yum im definitely going to be trying this recipe!! Love being vegan
I’ve never heard of chili kale chips before! And you’re so right on it being a balancing act. I’ve ruined so many kale chips because I didn’t get the measurements just right.
Ooh these are about a thousand times healthier than the crisps I usually go for. I know it’s hardly revolutionary as you said but I’ve never tried them either so hearing how you make them and with what is really helpful- I’ll definitely be giving these a go!

I haven’t thought about trying anything like this before, I kind of like Kale aha, so maybe with them crispy I’d enjoy it more! And I’m always on the lookout for healthy snacks, it’s far too easy to have super unhealthy snacks, but when snacks like these don’t actually take too long to make that’s pretty handy! Thanks for sharing 🙂

It’s never occurred to me to make anything like this before! I’m a constant snacker so this would be the perfect alternative to traditional potato crisps. x

I’ve really gotten into kale lately and never tried cooking it this way, will have to check it out! 🙂
This looks like a great way to eat kale. I need to add more green leafy veg to my diet so this would be ideal.
At the moment I only have one kale recipe – slow cooked with onion and garlic, then served hot, scattered with pine nuts. It has such a strong flavour though that I can only eat a small portion as a side dish!
I have a love-hate relationship with kale but I might end up liking it if I had these chips! Can’t wait to try this recipe out!
