AD – Gifted | I’ve ordered a few new clothing pieces recently, and as I was scrolling to see if there was anything else I wanted to add to my basket, I realised how little I’ve bought in the last year or so. And then I realised how thankful I am for my personal style, that I know what I like, and it’s fairly timeless and not so trend driven.
My Personal Style
I like monochrome, neutrals, tailoring, mixing fabrics like tweeds, faux leather and velvet or suede, and it all fits together perfectly because 95% of it is black, white, grey, beige, camel or burgundy. Trend driven purchases tend to be based on a cut, rather than a colour. But even so, I know what shapes and styles work for me. Translation: I refuse to let the skinny jean be cancelled, paper bag makes me look wider and shapeless, but I’m here for a high waisted culotte. Style icons include Olivia Pope, Blair Waldorf, and Olivia Palermo, to name a few.
Last March when lockdown one started, I was definitely in the camp that knew this would be months and not weeks. But I definitely didn’t foresee striking 1 full year off in my calendar either. Towards the end of last summer when we were down to less than 100 new cases a day and fewer than 10 deaths, I genuinely thought we might have seen the end of this in the not too distant future. Well, blame what you want, schools open, no real travel restrictions and the lack of airport checks, eat out to help out, poor track and trace. All of the above? But here we are.

And you know what? Those clothes I thought might see the inside of a restaurant last autumn will still be great outfits and won’t look dated when I wear them for the first time this autumn. And yes, I doubt a restaurant will see me before autumn.
At least I know that camel is a timeless colour, and faux leather trousers come back around every A/W.

But as we start thinking about wearing something other than loungewear and try to remember how to put an outfit together again, it’s been comforting to know that with all of the back and forth in the decision making and new variants, anything I choose to buy will still be able to have its moment.
A dog friendly wardrobe
And it will also be nice to wear something that isn’t dog friendly. Those mixed fabrics I mentioned? Little paw has other plans sometimes. For anyone unaware, my small furry one is quite clingy. He spends several hours a day on my lap. And as much as I’d love to wear some of my favourite knitwear and tweed dresses at home, I can’t comfortably do that without worrying that one awkwardly placed paw could ruin it.
As you can see, my knitted co-ord can’t comfortably have its time at home. Thankfully, the jumper is still super cute alone and goes with almost my entire wardrobe. That’s evident by the fact I’m wearing the same one in almost all of these photos.

But I’m looking forward to being able to throw an outfit together that Hugo has no role in, and know it doesn’t look out of place even if I’ve mentally planned it 4 months before I leave the house.

An interesting post! I like to keep the pieces in my wardrobe that give me joy – those pieces that I feel really good in. I’m months away from being able to go out and do anything but shop for groceries so I haven’t planned my outfit yet. Hugo is so cute!

Oh, WOULD that I could say I have my own personal style, as well as be able to identify what that would even be :’) I know what style(s) I’d like to have (see pinterest board that has thousands of pins), but it’s a matter of execution that’s holding me back. Even then, I’m all over the place–professional/classy fits, light, summery, feminine ones, etc, etc. I like that you’re so into neutral though! It inspires me to really start investing in more staples & get with my own fashion game already, haha! x
I’ve been making better use of loungewear and trying to find ones that are a little different and/or glam it up a little bit. I think as I am at home most of the time I don’t need to be uncomfortable but I like to feel put together (if that makes sense, haha). I love the looks you’ve put together as they look great!

Your pup is so cute! And I agree, even at home it’s hard to wear what you like when you need to worry about other members of the family – haha! The kids and dog mean I need to be in comfortable and easily washable clothes!

This is a great post Sophie! I think a lot of people get caught up with fashion trends rather than wearing things that suit them or clothing they feel comfortable in. I don’t really buy into trends much anymore as I don’t agree with fast fashion. I also refuse to let the skinny jean be cancelled! I wear them all the time.

Love your style! I bought a few dresses off Depop last summer (when I thought it might end sometime soon) and I never got to wear them. So, I’m really looking forward to going out and wearing them. That being said, I am still loving loungewear

Style is a form of expression! Much like cooking and writing, it tells a story. Loving the knitted co-ord and that you have found clothing you love that is also dog-friendly. Camel is a timeless, classy color. I admit versatile clothing is as timeless. 🙂

I think my style is pretty much monochrome and neutrals as well. I haven’t bought clothes in quite a long time now, I’m still working from home at the moment but I’ve started to make sure I get dressed into ‘work’ clothes for the day again as I started falling into the habit of just wearing loungewear. So perhaps if I keep this up, it won’t be such a step up when I do go back into the office! xx
