This recipe is a little bit of an impromptu accident. Originally, I was going to be posting a gluten free pie crust recipe today. I know we’re only on day 9, but this is one of the last of the Recipe A Day May posts I’m making (I think I have 5 left now). With that in mind, I’ve made a lot of food over the last few weeks. And as I was making my pie crust, I realised I didn’t have a plan for what I was going to do with it afterward. By chance, I tried a tiny bit of the dough I was making and wondered if I could make this a biscuit instead. As you can probably tell by the title, it worked. My pie crust was suddenly an oat biscuits recipe. Read: it’s easier to give biscuits away to friends and family than an empty pie crust…
Also, can I have a moment of appreciation for the wonders of oat flour? Seriously, if you ever need to sub a flour in a recipe, try GF oat. It has about a 98% success rate, sweet or savoury.
As I said, these are plain biscuits, so feel free to add your own nuts, chocolate or raisins etc if you want to make them a little more interesting. The pie was going to be a shortcrust, so this recipe is rich and buttery. There isn’t much sugar in the recipe, but you can still taste a hint of sweetness when you bite into them.
The basic recipe only contains five ingredients and they only take 10 minutes to bake. All ingredients are regular household ingredients, so they’re a great easy bake. This would be a good one to make with kids too!
GF Basic Oat Biscuits Recipe
This recipe is dairy free, gluten free, vegan, nut free and can soy free depending on non-dairy butter choices.

GF Basic Oat Biscuits
Ingredients
- ¾ cup GF oat flour
- ¼ cup vegan butter I used Flora
- 1 tbsp golden caster sugar
- ¼ cup cold water
- ¼ tsp salt
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 175C/ 350F and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
-
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar and salt. Add in the butter and mix with a fork until the mix resembles breadcrumbs.
-
Add in the water 1tbsp at a time. You may need less than ¼ cup, so go slowly. Continue mixing as you stir the water in, until it starts to come together as a dough. Make sure it doesn’t get too wet! If you can roll it with your hand and it’s got a slightly tacky feel but doesn’t stick to you, it’s ready.
-
If you’re adding any extra ingredients, stir them in now.
-
Roll out the dough on a floured surface, then either cut with cookie cutters or break off small chunks and roll into small circles. These biscuits don’t spread much when you make them, so the size you roll them to will be near enough the size it ends up.
-
Place the biscuits on the prepared tray and place in the oven for 10-12 minutes until they’re firm on the outside. These are soft bake biscuits, leave an extra few minutes if you want crunchy!
-
Leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving
Serve and enjoy!

What would you add to yours? And if anyone would actually like to see that pie recipe next month, let me know!
Until tomorrow,
Sophie

Thanks for sharing!
These look super tasty and easy to bake which means they would be perfect for me! The only problem I think I would have is making sure that I don’t end up eating them all in one go!
The biscuits look so delicious! And the inside so soft and melty! Yummy!
These are so versatile. You could literally add anything to these to make them sweet or savory! Great recipe, I’m always in awe of how much you cook and bake and especially your recipe a day posts!

I’ve just gone gluten free so these are perfect! Oats have become one of my go-to foods and always looking for snack options. Have added it to my recipes folder! X

You had me sold on the “easy to do with kids” as that is about my level of baking! These look yummy though, and definitely straightforward to do. I would be a chocolate chip girl, but I’m trying to be good, so maybe some raisins might be a nice touch? Great recipe – and good luck with the pie crust!
Ohh my this looks so delicious Sophie! Haha I love how versatile that pie crust is. It’s def better to give friends and family biscuits than an empty pie crust! I like that there’s a hint of sweetness to it. It looked a bit dry on the outside but it looks savory on the inside. Thank you for sharing lovely!
I love oat biscuits and this recipe is so simple! I’ll definitely give this a try soon! Thanks for sharing x

Haha yeah it is a lot easier to give family or friends biscuits than it is pie crusts! I would probably add a bit of chocolate in mine and have a chocolate biscuit. Although I’d probably have white chocolate as it’s my favourite <3
