The Travel Sized Made Me Buy It

travel sized

Hi guys, today’s skincare week post is all about travel sized beauty. Specifically, those travel sized, deluxe samples that have been so amazing that I’ve gone out an bought the full version. Now, if that was all we were talking about this post would be pretty short so we’re also going to have a little chat about why I love minis and how I like to use them. I thought as holiday season is starting, it would be a great time to talk about how you can take them with you.

Firstly, never throw away your minis or samples

Not only have I found some products I adore because of gifts with purchase or birthday gifts from stores/ brands, but they’re genuinely really useful.

I have a basket full of them where I keep my beauty storage. That probably sounds excessive, but if you get minis of products you love then keep the empty tube or keep the mini to one side for travel purposes. It will come as no surprise to any of you that I like to travel with a skincare product for every occasion. If I actually did that, there would be no room for anything else. When I have sample tubes of something I love, providing the packaging is sturdy enough, I like to refill mine when I travel. That way you can afford to take more products away with you without sacrificing on space. A pipette is involved, sometimes it’s not practical.

Bring some extras

Again, this isn’t always practical, but it’s worth it. If you don’t want to refill the smaller bottles and you don’t feel the need to take five serums on a three day trip, bring one full sized product and a couple of smaller ones with you. Let’s be real, unless it’s a product you’ve been wanting to try or you’ve somehow managed to run out of something, you’re never going to use the mini at home. So, make the most of them when you’re away. When you arrive, try the mini and if you don’t like it, you’ve still got your reliable product to fall back on. You could find your new favourite product.

Buy travel sizes?

I know this sounds crazy, but things like those cute Christmas bauble decorations come in handy. Not only are they in smaller versions of the ‘proper’ packaging, so aren’t going to fall apart if you take them away, they’re also a great way of trying things. Last January, picked up a mini Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm for a whopping £6 in the sale, I now have a 15ml version of one of my favourite cleansers ready to go when I am.

Another mini scheme I like is the Feel Unique Pick ‘n’ Mix scheme. You can get up to five of the mini products that you usually get for free when you spend over a certain amount. And as they’re technically supposed to be free, you only pay for shipping when you buy them and some of the samples come in 5 or 10ml tubes. You can try up to five new products a month for under £4. And if you decide to buy a full sized version, you can claim that money back against your purchase.

Travel sized that made me buy the full size

Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask

This was a gift with purchase when I bought the original Moisture Surge once. As I already loved the original, I knew I’d probably like this product but I was unlikely to have picked one up myself. Turns out I like this formula more than the traditional Moisture Surge. I was given a 30ml tube as my sample too which lasted forever.

Ren Vita Mineral Daily Supplement Cream

I got one for my mum. She loved it. I felt like I was missing out. I got my sample sized one in the aforementioned Pick ‘n’ Mix scheme to test it against my sensitive skin. It’s now one of my favourite moisturisers.

Ren Wake Wonderful Night Time Facial

This product is great skin in a tube. I was very grateful to get this in the smaller version because this is an exfoliator, I was nervous to use it on my sensitive skin. It stings a little, and definitely isn’t for everyday use, but this is one of my favourite quick fix, I need to look better by tomorrow kind of products.  I received this one as a birthday gift with purchase from SpaceNK, and the small tube seemed to refill itself because it lasted months.

Travel Sized

Clinique All About Eyes Serum

This has now been discontinued and I’m not at all bitter about that. I thought about not including it as you can’t buy it. But, this is the newer version of it (which I’m yet to try). Without going into too much detail, this was my saviour when my insomnia was at its worst. The rollerball made you feel so fresh and awake even on no sleep at all. This was also a gift with a Moisture Surge purchase at some point.

I didn’t realise when I started this that my top picks were four from two brands. Otherwise, I would have tried to mix it up a little. But I have mentioned both of these brands many times on my blog, so at least you know they’re genuinely my favourites. Not that I would ever lie about that, but you know…

Are there any products you’ve sampled and just HAD to buy?

Until tomorrow,

Sophie

  1. i definitely like to use trial sizes for things like primer cause they can be so hit or miss! before spending all that money, i need to make sure it works for my skin type!! i’ve sampled the glam & glow pore mud mask and it was soo good! trying out the samples really makes me wanna buy it even though the price tag is so high!

  2. Great post Sophie! I love the little tips you’ve included at the beginning and the products you’ve featured seem great! I love Clinique and often buy their Christmas gift sets in the sale so I can try a few products. I love receiving samples too!

    Lots of love,

  3. I always throw away samples because i never know when i will use them and i hate the idea of them taking up space. But then it comes to traveling and im in trouble. This was a lovely read

  4. Travel size are so great for traveling but also of course to try a product before committing to the full size product. I had a sample size mascara from Dior and it was so good, i had to buy the full size one!

  5. I love the thrill of choosing minis when there’s a special offer on with the full sized products. It’s a great opportunity to try something new. Clarins Beauty Flash Balm made its way into my life this way and has stayed ever since!

  6. Such a great idea for a post! I love buying mini products for trying out and for travelling as they are so handy! I also love the Clinique moisture surge mask! Makes my skin feel amazing. I sampled the Neals Yard Moisturiser before and had to get the full size! X

  7. Ooh I really like the idea of the Feel Unique Pick’n’mix scheme. That’s so worth doing to discover new products and it’s really affordable too. I recently bought myself a travel sized Ted Baker perfume to take on holiday which I love so hope they do a full sized one. Great post Sophie! <3 xx

  8. I obsess over travel minis, I actually liked some that were given in a hotel and collected the new ones they put in every day to take home with me

I don’t think I’ve really used travel versions to sample anything, but that’s a really good idea!

  9. I bought the benefit that gal primer after trying the sample size. It was so good for a bit of radiance for no foundation days. I’ve never tried anything from REN before but those products look so good. And I totally agree about Clinique they’re products are soo good. I’m currently using their dramatically different moisturizing lotion.

  10. I love getting minis with purchases! I’m always looking for new products to try (especially when it comes to skin care), and minis are such a good way of doing that without forking out loads of cash. Once had a sample given to me of the Origins Out of Trouble mask and now it’s a holy grail product. ☺️

  11. Great post! I totally agree with what you said about not throwing away minis/samples. I’ve discovered some of my all-time favorite products from samples I’ve tried out first!

  12. Travel size anything always saves me from taking a large cleanser/moisturizer! The best thing is buying small refillable tubes to put in a bit of a cleanser for however long you’re staying without having it take so much space.

I sampled a First Aid Beauty moisturizer from Sephora and loved it so much I had to get it – love a good moisturizer that makes my face feel soft!

  13. I totally agree, I love it around Christmas time when the travel size items end up in the sale! Such a great value for money. I have never heard of the Pick ‘n’ Mix on Feel Unique but I really love the idea! I haven’t tried any of the products you have mentioned but I am looking for a good eye cream!! I got a travel size sample lipstick free from ColourPop one time, fell in love with it, lost it on a night out, completely forgot what the shade was called, heartbreaking I know 🙁 xx

  14. Minis are so cute and i think thats why i love them! A lot of the time small sized (travel) bottles are easy for travelling but a lot of the time they end up being more expensive!

  15. I’ve never really been one to buy mini products, but it sounds like a great idea and I wish I had thought of it sooner so I could save some money on products I didn’t like!

  16. Clinique’s moisture surge range are my all time favourite skincare! I love mini products because they’re just so cute, and always love taking them on holiday, it’s so satisfying using up products and not having to bring them home, but taking a full size as well is a good suggestion!

  17. I love these tips. I love the sound of the eye serum. I’ve been looking everywhere for a rollerball one, so now I know which brand to look for!

  18. Omg I’m such a sucker for travel size products too! The most notable is the pixi glow tonic – I bought the travel version as with skin care, you never know how you’ll like it, but ended up loving it and have been repurchasing ever since!
